How to Have Fun in the Sun Around Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Duke is full of students from all over the world. And because of that, a variety of customs and experiences give our student body its unique flavor. But there is one commonality you can count on in Durham: despite whatever mode of transportation you may take while you’re in the Gothic Wonderland, you can count on sharing the weather. There’s no escaping it. We can sing, “rain, rain, go away, come again some other day” for as long as we want, but that doesn’t mean that we’re going to suddenly put away our rain boots. Over the past few months, Durham’s weather has been quite unpredictable. But, for the remainder of the year, we can pretty much assume weather to stay between 70 and 80 degrees. So, let’s enjoy this nice weather as much as possible! Duke offers great places to enjoy the sun. And, if you can’t find a place you like on campus (which would be hard to do because we have the AMAZING Sarah P. Duke Gardens), the Durham community also offers great opportunities to enjoy some fun in the sun.

Opportunities On-Campus

  • Walk around the 55 acres that make up the Duke Gardens. And take a picnic basket with you to enjoy a late lunch by the pond.
  • Enjoy brunch at the Nasher Museum of Art. Open at noon on Sunday until 4:30pm. Enjoy orange-infused French toast, wonderful salads and sandwiches, and locally crafted ice cream or sorbet for dessert (but take note: the menu does change seasonally).
  • Sit outside on the main quad with friends and enjoy the gothic architecture that makes Duke so special.

Opportunities off-Campus

  • Check out the Flat River where you can go boating/sailing, hiking, and mild whitewater rafting. And although it’s a 30-minute drive, it’s a great place to discover what Durham has to offer!
  • Walk over to the Washington Duke Inn for a full tea with sandwiches and sweets, and then take a nice walk around the trail!
  • The Durham Farmer’s market is open Saturdays from 8am-12pm and is only an 8-minute drive from campus. Enjoy locally grown produce that will leave your taste buds wanting more.
