At-Home (or In-Dorm!) Makeovers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Around the time of midterms or finals, you may notice a very distressing thing in your life – your skin begins to look worse, and your eyes turn from sleepy to baggy. We all know this happens, so it should be no surprise that many solutions have been brought forth specifically to combat this. You can restore your natural glow from within your dorm room with products found around Durham!

Whole Foods carries a special facial soap with clay and essential oils called Alaffia’s Shea & Rooibos Antioxidant Goat Milk Soap – you read right, it contains raw goat milk! This may send you running for the hills, but the New York Times ran an article praising Whole Foods’s line of soap bars. And why not? This bar, with its Moroccan Red Clay, can absorb oils from the skin, leaving you feeling fresh as a daisy.

If you were looking for an excuse to make a trip to Forever 21, here it is: Their line-up of ready-made face masks with ingredients ranging from papaya to pomegranate is especially convenient for busy Duke girls. Each product serves a different purpose for your skin, so read the labels! Then just apply, wait about 15 minutes, and rinse off.

Finally, you can look right on campus for items to make your own face masks and beauty products. Run to the Great Hall and grab a couple bananas or some yogurt and follow the instructions on this siteto create skin-soothing, pore-cleansing facials!

You don’t need to wait for your skin to break out to treat it to some R&R. Find a weekend where your schedule is less packed than usual, ask a couple friends to go shopping with you for a nice “spa day,” and enjoy the classic girl-bonding-and-makeover time.

Sabrina is a Junior at Duke University, and is double majoring in English and Public Policy. A born and bred South African, Sabrina has traveled to the USA to pursue her higher education. As well as being a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Sabrina is also Assistant Vice President for Recruitment for the Panhellenic Association at Duke. Sabrina has written for Duke's daily newspaper, The Chronicle and Duke's fashion magazine, FORM. After graduating, she hopes to attend law school preferably in her favourite city, New York. In her spare time, Sabrina vegges out to various fashion blogs, mindless TV (Pretty Little Liars anyone?) and online shopping (which borders on an addiction). If you manage to catch her in an energetic mood, she's probably on her way to cardiodance (or to the nearest mall).
