Five Great Jams to Hit Off the New Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

It’s that time of the year. Radio stations have been playing the year’s hits on constant repeat, over-doing just about every song you liked the first ten times you heard it. Over the break, I came up with a list of a few undiscovered and/or forgotten songs that will get you in the mood to celebrate the start of the New Year. These five songs are carefree, upbeat hip-hop jams to get you in the mood for a fresh start and pumped up for a happy 2012.

  1. When I came across this song, I couldn’t stop playing it on repeat. Karmin dominates in “Crash Your Party” with energy and purpose. The song is really a verbal chick-flick, as Karmin belts out her revengeful song, like any girl upset at a past ex-boyfriend.
  2. Cee-Lo Green, a recent acclaimed star for his world-renowned “Forget You” song, has a distinct voice that draws you in. After seeing him live in concert over the break, I was drawn to one of his less well-known songs, “Bright Lights, Bigger City.” The song is very catchy, so check it out!
  3. Keri Hilson’s “Pretty Girl Rock” gets any girl feeling good and ready to take on the day. The song instills a sense of confidence through its upbeat attitude. The positive vibes from this song are great to combat the post-holiday blues.
  4. David Guetta’s “I’m a Machine,” featuring Crystal Nicole, in my opinion is a very underrated masterpiece from Guetta’s hit album Nothing but the Beat.
  5. Another one of David Guetta’s bests is his song “Who’s that Chick” featuring none other than Rihanna. The collaboration of the two results in nothing less than expected: greatness.

That’s all for now. Check out these songs for a start and be on your way to a rockin’ 2012.
