Feather Hair Extensions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Feathers have been used in the fashion world for decades: as earrings, on necklaces, on handbags, as decorations on clothing, and in hair bands and headbands. But now, get ready for the new trend of feather hair extensions.

Think Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, and, of course, Ke$ha. Many celebrities have adopted the style and made it famous. It’s become famous on college campuses as well, and is making its way to the forefront of the fashion world at Duke University. The fad is everywhere you look, and attracting followers by the dozen.

And no wonder- it’s so easy! They come ready to either be beaded into your hair or clipped in. The bead-in feather extensions require you to feed some hair through the bead, and then add the feathers. Clip-in ones are self explanatory, and so easy to change depending on your mood!

Both the bead-in and clip-in feather hair extensions are washable, blow dryer friendly, and curling iron friendly. They come seven to ten inches long, and in any color you could possibly think of. Some popular ones include neutrals like black and white, or brown. However, many salons and online retailers have had success with neon-bright feathers, too!

Another great thing about the extensions is that they won’t break your wallet. Lots of times when you go into a salon, you leave with much lighter pockets- not with this style! The feathers usually cost between $10 and $20, with kits costing a bit more.

So, say hello to our feathered friends of the fall! This trend is headed in with the new season, and is sure to stick around.

In her spare time, Sabrina vegges out to various fashion blogs, mindless TV (Pretty Little Liars anyone?) and online shopping (which borders on an addiction). If you manage to catch her in an energetic mood, she's probably on her way to cardiodance (or to the nearest mall).
