Remember the Reason for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

Every year that January 15th falls on a Monday, children rejoice as they celebrate a day off from school. People love this three day weekend, but do we ever really sit and relish in the purpose of this holiday? Do we truly understand and know the history behind it?

In the USA, many holidays are celebrated without the meaning of it being fully appreciated and discussed. Therefore, I would like to take the time to appreciate the true meaning of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

This holiday was given to honor MLK Jr. as a person, but also for his beliefs and what he fought for. He was a part of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and alongside other black rights groups fought for racial equality in the United States. This day is given to honor MLK and those who have and continue to fight for racial equality.

Take time to learn more about the importance of this holiday here.
