My Social Canvas on the DU Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

Fashion, social responsibility, and female empowerment- these are the three key elements that helped Lisa Meyer found My Social Canvas in 2012, a small but mighty organization you are sure to start hearing a lot more about. My Social Canvas (MSC) first came on the Her Campus radar during College Fashionweek where the two groups merged with several other sponsors to put on a phenomenal weekend of college fashion. But, MSC does so much more than act as a background sponsor to our favorite events. It is an organization that works endlessly to bring opportunities, both big and small, to so many young women. Now, you can find MSC on the Pio turf every day.

So what happens at MSC? Founder Lisa and her team work to create design competitions and partnerships that accomplish two things: 1. Young women have the chance to see their art and designs recreated onto clothing, totes, stickers, and so much more. 2. Campaign efforts from these collections benefit a variety of female empowerment endeavors. My favorite? The “Design for Her Education” collection that worked with WomenOne to bring education and design opportunities to young women and girls who lack the opportunities to do so. This campaign brought out support from powerhouse women like Kelly Rutherford (aka Lily from Gossip Girl) and Marie Claire’s Editor-In-Chief Anne Fulenwider.

The other side of the support system came from a dedicated group of college women working as campus representatives for the program. These young women live every day in a way that empowers the women around them and spreads the word of MSC’s latest initiative. Now with 32 representatives in total, this campus rep program is growing and continuously bringing on excited young women who, as Lisa has given the resources to do so, “design a life they love.” Campus Rep Morgan Seech said of MSC that, “I love how MSC shows the importance of education and the power of kindness” and Rep Tara Silberg has said, “MSC shows me that I don’t have to hide how proud I am of being a girl. Through MSC, I see that we, as confident young women, could do anything he could do, better.” Needless to say, not only does this program reach its hands outwards, but the brand also reaches inward and has created a strong internal community of young women who are growing as MSC does.

Alicia is a recent graduate from the University of Denver where she earned her degree in Economics and Gender & Women's Studies. She can always be found with a cup of coffee in her hand and is likely to be caught singing 90s R&B throughout the day. Now exploring her next steps in life, she is taking fashion courses at the Parsons New School of Design and planning out her graduate school and career moves. She is inspired by the writings of Roxanne Gay, the style of Alexa Chung, and the lifestyle of Grace Coddington.
