Demystifying the “Athleisure” Trend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

Just like every other college girl, I love a good pair of leggings. So you could say I was a little bit excited to discover the new trend that is taking over in 2016: athleisure. Basically, it’s a slightly dressed up version of a college student’s everyday attire. It’s comfortable and relaxed, great for weekends, going to class, and running errands. Most importantly, it’s unbelievably comfortable because it emphasizes practicality while remaining stylish. If athleisure sounds as good to you as it does to me, here are 5 easy ways to take advantage of this fun new trend!

1. Find a pair of cute sneakers

Sneakers are the cornerstone of this trend. They add a certain casualness to an outfit, giving it the athletic aspect of athleisure. Aside from being really cute, they’re also super practical. If you’re going be running around town checking off your mile-long to-do list or are looking at a long walk to class, you can look stylish while also keeping your feet comfy and supported. That’s a win-win in my book!

2. Choose your bottoms

Obviously, leggings are a great choice to pair with your sneakers. But there are some other options to consider too. One really chic suggestion is a pair of leather leggings— they’re really trendy right now and I think they look pretty awesome paired with tennis shoes and a long sweater. If you want to stay on the safer side, a pair of cropped dark wash jeans or jeggings are great alternatives if leggings are a bit too casual.

3. Get creative with your tops

This is where the fashionable, pulled-together characteristic of this trend comes into play. The shoes and pants are all about practicality and comfort. Of course, the top should be practical and comfortable too, but it should also be stylish. Think chunky turtlenecks, cozy cardigans, tunics, and clever graphic tees. The slimness and minimalism of the pants allows you to really play with layers, length, and texture.

4. Stay warm with some fun accessories

A cute beanie or thick scarf is a perfect addition to this look to keep you warm. Again, this trend is all about practicality. Cozy accessories are a necessary part of winter fashion and athleisure embraces that fact!

5. Layer up!

The best part about athleisure is that it is a healthy mix of sporty and fashionable. So sleek, long coats aren’t going to clash with the leggings and sneakers. Instead, they’ll add to the overall pulled-together and stylish element of the outfit and will make the casualness and practicality look intentional.
