Your Guide to the Perfect Beach Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

We’ve been waiting forever for summer to arrive and now it’s finally approaching. Summer in the city can is fun and full of events and beautiful days spent adventuring. But living in Philadelphia has some extra perks: it only takes an hour or two to drive to New Jersey’s beaches.

Say what you will about Jersey, but their beaches are the only ones we have in a short drive, so take advantage of them! Here are some tips for planning the best beach day with your friends.

1. Decide where you want to go

What do you want to get out of your beach day? Are you looking for a boardwalk, unique restaurants, or just a quiet, clean beach to relax at? Each Jersey beach town is unique, so make sure you do your research before you show up at a beach and find out that it’s not what you were expecting. Check out sites like New Jersey Shore and NJ Monthly in order to find the perfect getaway for your beach day, or ask around amongst your local friends.

Also keep in mind that some beaches will require you to buy beach tags, and free parking could be difficult to find. Make sure you decide how much extra money you’re willing to spend, and plan accordingly.

2. Pack up

If you want to be simple, just include the basics in your beach bag: sunscreen (obviously), a towel, water (you’ll be thirsty, trust me), a book, and headphones. If you’re the sporty type, bring a boogie board (so much fun!), a beach ball, or another beach-friendly accessory, like a football or volleyball. Consider bringing a beach chair or umbrella to maximize comfort while in the sand.

It’s also worth it to bring extra clothes with you. I like to wear my bathing suit under a cute cover-up, and have an extra set of clothes handy to change into for the ride home. The last thing you want to do is sit in a car for two hours in a wet, sandy bathing suit.

3. Leave early in the morning

It’s probably a no-brainer, but leaving early is really the best way to get the most out of your day trip to the beach. You get to enjoy more time in the sun, plus you get first dibs on where to put your towel down and where to park the car. If you’re extra tired, you can just sleep on the beach!

4. Get dinner at the beach

Why drive back to Philadelphia when the Jersey beach towns have great places to eat? Whether it’s a pizza place on the boardwalk or a cute little seafood restaurant, try something new at the Jersey shore! Pro tip: find a local and ask them which restaurant actually has the best food.
