Top 10 Movies to Watch for Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

Maybe your ideal Valentine’s Day is lounging at home in sweatpants, unapologetically eating junk food and watching a ton of movies. It doesn’t matter if it’s with your girls or your significant other, this is a great way to spend the holiday. Well, if you’re still trying to put together a small list, we’ve got you covered! Grab your popcorn and enjoy!

1.     Dirty Dancing

There’s passionate dancing, sweltering love and it’s set in the sixties! This is one of those movies where you know the entire soundtrack and even act out the dance scenes. A brusque dance instructor recruits an inexperienced girl, visiting for the summer, and the two slowly fall in love. What’s not to like here?

2.     10 Things I Hate About You

Rude but smart high schooler, Kat, is swept off of her feet by the dashing bad boy, Patrick Verona. Little does she know that Patrick has an ulterior motive. It’s more of a romantic comedy, but I promise the romantic gestures will make you swoon for Patrick Verona!

3.     Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist

People often fall in love with each other over music. Nick is an awkward boy who just can’t get over his self-centered ex-girlfriend, Tris. Norah is a friend of Tris who takes a liking towards Nick. The two grow more interested in each other as they try to find their favorite pop-up band in New York City. The story follows them through the many obstacles of the night.

4.     Just Friends

The idea of two best friends falling in love with each other is heart-warming. When Chris, an insecure and overweight guy, tells his best friend Jamie he has feelings for her, she rejects him. Fast-forward a decade later, and Chris is wealthy and incredibly fit. He comes home for the holidays and sees Jamie again. His feelings for her never left as he spends the movie, trying to win her over.

5.     The Wedding Planner

Mary’s career could not be any more successful. Everyone wants her to plan their weddings. After nearly dying and being saved by the perfect man, she finally thinks her love life will come together too. They go on a date and everything could not be more perfect. However, Mary gets a reality check when she finds herself planning that dreamy guy’s wedding. Matthew McConaughey stars in this movie. And because of that there is really no excuse to NOT watch it.

6.     13 Going on 30

I’m sure everyone has seen 13 Going on 30 but it’s such a classic that I had to put it on the list! Jenna is an unsatisfied and frustrated junior in high school. She only has one friend, Mattie, an awkward guy hopelessly in love with her. Jenna wishes to be thirty with a great career and love life. Overnight, she is transported to her thirty-year-old self. Jenna realizes that people like Mattie have grown up and want nothing to do with her. Adulthood isn’t as easy as she thought it was. I recommend watching this one with your girls. They can call relate to the “Love is a Battlefield,” song. Don’t be afraid to dance to the Thriller scene!

7.     27 Dresses

Jane is an uptight, selfless woman who is always the bridesmaid. Soon she finds herself in the wedding of her sister and boss, who happens to be the love of her life, or so she thinks. A charming reporter, Kevin interviews her, smitten with her lifestyle. However, she instantly distrusts him. One night shifts Jane’s entire love life as she is faced with her new feelings for Kevin.

8.     Baggage Claim

Determined Montana is pressured to find a man due to her younger sister’s engagement and overbearing mother. She’s so pressured that she grants herself one month to find a husband. Some time frame! With the help of her friends, Montana jets back and forth across the country to track down her exes and spark some sort of flame again. Little does she know the man that she is looking for is right in front of her eyes.

9.     Her

Lonely Theodore is left lonely and hurt from his broken marriage. He becomes fascinated with an operating device that has instinct and feelings. He slowly develops deep affection and love for the computer. This film is much more somber than the other nine but it will leave a poignant impression on you.

10.  Valentine’s Day

We’ll end this list with a more upbeat film and perhaps the most quintessential film for Valentine’s Day. Several interconnected people in Los Angeles experience the good and bad on Valentine’s Day whether it’s marriages, first loves or engagements.

For Valentine’s Day, it’s okay to stay ultra low-key and have a movie night. There’s no rule that says dress up and do something out of the ordinary. Embrace the feeling of doing nothing and just enjoy yourself with one (or several) of these movies!
