Is Social Media and Technology Destroying our Generation?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DESU chapter.

With snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook in its prime, we can see a clear change in our generations behavior. Children today lack concentration and communication skills, while there is a large increase in cyber bullying.

In today’s day and age parents reward their children with electronic gifts such as tablets, iPads, and cellular devices rather than toys. When children spend their free time playing games it is difficult for them to refrain from doing so during class time. They may have trouble concentrating on what is important due to their constant desire to use these electronic devices.

Another con of technology and social media would be lack of communication skills. Teenagers sit right next to each other and use texting as their only source of communication. Online dating through the use of social media is booming and is very unsafe for our generation.

Lastly, social media is leading to an increase in cyber bullying. An increased period of time on social media is allowing teenagers to scrutinize each other and lead to abusive tweets and posts. Teenagers are already cruel enough in person, allowing another medium for them to increase this behavior gives way to teen depression and suicide.
