The Power of Black Girl Magic

It was hard for me growing up to love and embrace my natural hair. I lacked confidence in embracing my funky curls and coils. Everyone has insecurities no matter what their skin color is. Personally, the cure for me was seeing other independent black women rock their hair in different shapes and styles. When you enhance and embrace your natural hair, whether you know it or not, you give another black girl inspiration to try something new with their hair. We are all connected by being our best creative and unique selves. Black women are beautiful. Weaves, knots, braids, crotchets, twists; the versality that we have is not only what makes us different, but what makes us vivacious and vibrant. It is our self-love that we share and have in ourselves that makes us shine.

When we see our women succeeding, we all stand together and applaud for them. Whether the platform that we are watching from is Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, the news, an award show, we always show up for each other. When we break down barriers, we show younger black girls that anything is possible.

So many of us are making moves and are paving the way for the next generation of greats. To Michelle Obama to being the most gracious, beautiful First Lady to ever set foot in the White House, to Beyonce for being the greatest female entertainer of all time, to Rihanna for making affordable beauty products for women of all colors and shades, to Shonda Rhimes who has been and will continue to dominate the television industry, and to Issa Rae who made her own way and ensures us in every Insecure episode that we are not alone.

These are just some of the few women who we can look at when we think that our dreams are too far to reach or are just lacking some inspiration. When you reach a goal and achieve an accomplishment, it matters.  You matter, black girl, and you are magic.
