Beyoncé’s Lemonade: Is It worth Drinking?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DESU chapter.

Within the last week, Beyoncé surprised us yet again with another surprise visual album just as did with her last self-titled album Beyoncé, right in time for her Formation World Tour. And people are still in shock till this day, myself included. Leaving us all wanting more, Beyoncé first released her visual album, Lemonade as a special on HBO and right after released the 12 track album on the music streaming app, Tidal, owned by her husband, Jay Z.

So I know what you’re thinking, why would she name her album Lemonade? Well with the visual presentation of the album, your question will be answered with a clique: when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. The oh so private Beyoncé decided to share her story of her finding out her husband cheated on her (YES JAY Z), but learned to forgive him because no other man can love her the way he does. Throughout the visual there were these sections in which represented the emotions that we was going through as it relates to her path of forgiveness: Intuition, Denial, Anger, Apathy, Emptiness, Accountability, Reformation, Forgiveness, Resurrection, Hope and lastly Redemption. The visual presentation brought out her Creole roots, with the videos being shot in New Orleans, Louisiana.

As an artist who has been in the music industry for more than 10 years, Beyoncé has been able to grow and develop as both a singer and a performer. The visual performance of Lemonade shows how Beyoncé has grown as a performer as there isn’t as much choreography as there is her acting out each scene perfectly. In the album its self, it isn’t your typical Beyonce: R&B songs and one or two you can dance to. That simply isn’t the case with this album with there being elements of rock, country and some folk intertwined in the album, showing that she’s grown as an artist.

So, should you drink Beyonce’s Lemonade? I’ll leave that for you to decide. Give it a listen on Tidal and iTunes where you have the regular album and the visual album too.
