In the last year, I have had hair down to my butt, shoulder-length hair, and super cropped hair above my shoulders. It has been a drastic transformation, but I’m so glad that I did it. I had really long hair since middle school, and I was religious about my long hair. I didn’t let anyone touch it, never dyed it, and hardly used heat to style. I felt that my long hair was part of my identity and never pictured myself cutting it off.  When I decided to cut it last spring, I was honestly just tired of the tangles. I would spend so much time each day tearing at my head to relieve my knots. My first time cutting it, I had 13 inches chopped and donated it. Second time, I cut an additional four inches. Now that I have very short hair, I’m not sure I’ll ever go back.

It’s Easy to Style!

The shorter my hair is, the curlier it gets. I no longer have to use heat to style. I am bringing back my middle school mousse product to scrunch my wet hair and letting it air dry. As summer approaches, I know I’m less likely to want to style my hair anyway and will let it go natural. I am also having so much fun trying out hair accessories that my long hair just didn’t quite complement, such as clips, plastic headbands, cloth ribbons, etc. Clips especially are super trendy right now, and there is such a wide variety of decorated clips and pins. As I mentioned, no more tangles! My daily routine is so much easier, and I don’t have to worry about how I have my hair before I go to bed because I know I’ll wake up with perfect hair. If anything, cut it for convenience.

Give Yourself a New Look

Cutting your long locks can be transformative! You can gain a new sense of style as you change your whole look. It gives you the opportunity to redefine your first impression. Short hair can be styled in so many ways and looks better with those hats you’ve shoved to the back of your closet. It’s also edgy and can make you feel like a badass. I guarantee you won’t be able to stop running your fingers through it.

Makes You Look Older

Shorter hair is more professional and appears cleaner cut. I have my first big girl job this summer, and (if you have a baby face like me) I wanted a more mature look to match my business attire. Long hair can look straggly/fizzy/messy in contrast to short, defined hair, so keeping it short can give off a put-together feel. A shorter style may be a “mom look,” but what the heck, it will match your mom jeans this spring!

Save on Shampoo

As a broke college student, I am always looking for ways to save money. My short hair has helped keep my money in my account. Not only do I have to wash my hair less, but I don’t have to use nearly as much product as before. Fancy shampoos can rack up to $15 a bottle, and if you’re like me and refuse to use Pantene or Herbal Essences, then you want to make it last as long as possible. Now a bottle of shampoo is lasting me well over a month, whereas before I was lucky to get three weeks out of a bottle.
