‘Tis the Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

Okay girls, I realize this reference I’m about to use may seem outdated. These days we’re all about Modern Family and How I Met Your Mother. But I hope that at least some of you have remained avid Friends fans like I have.

Ever seen “The One Where Phoebe Hates PBS”? First of all, who hates PBS?! But that’s beside the point—as Phoebe often is… In the episode, Joey argues that there is no such thing as a completely selfless good deed, because a good deed makes the deed do-er feel good too. Despite her efforts, Phoebe can’t prove him wrong.

I can’t prove Joey wrong either. (Kind of embarrassing when Joey Tribbiani outsmarts you….) But fortunately, I don’t need to. Because my philosophy on life finds no fault in making two people feel good. So what if one of those people is you? The way I see it, that is only an added incentive to spread cheer to others.

And with the holidays fast approaching, this is the perfect time of year to spread that cheer! Retailers love this season because society is in the gift-giving mode. Now, I love fashion as much as any Her Campus collegiette, but personally, I don’t think retail is always the best way to go. My favorite gifts to give (and to get) are the homemade ones— those original presents with the added personal touch.
Here are my top three gifts:

1.    Yummy treats. Make some Christmas candy. Ask Mom for a recipe— preferably one heavy on the chocolate. It’s better to bake for people because then you don’t eat all the goodies by yourself. Although, do be sure to sneak a few cookies, buckeyes, etc. before you give the entire batch away!

2.    Crafts. This gift option has endless possibilities… You can decorate a picture frame for Grandma and Grandpa. Paint the letters of your roommate’s initials (as pictured). Or, you can embark on a more lengthy project—make a scrapbook for a best friend or sibling. It’s easy to find a craft that fits into your time frame and budget. I’m especially fond of Hobby Lobby during the holiday season.

3.    Letters. Have you ever received a love letter? Maybe not a lovey-dovey romantic one, but one from a friend telling you how wonderful you are? There is no better feeling than to be appreciated. Write one for someone else! Sit down and express your gratitude for someone you care about. Tell her just why exactly it is that she will be your Maid of Honor, bestie for the restie, etc. Even better, give the note and some of those delicious treats you baked with love!

So get crackin’ on those gifts, girls. Take a much-needed break from studying and start crafting! Your friends and family will appreciate your efforts, and you’ll feel great, too! It’s killing two birds with one stone. Or more seasonally appropriate, topping two trees with one star.
