Pithy & Profound: Tips for a GREAT Monon

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

1. Host reunions.  Let’s be honest, Monon is basically DePauw’s Homecoming.  Monon weekend is the perfect time to reach out to your alumni friends and catch up over some breakfast…or a couple beers.

2. Be ready for the TUNDRA!!  It is always the most miserable weather every time the Monon Bell game is at Wabash, so dress for the occasion.  Seriously, wear gloves, long underwear, boots, a hat, and double-up on scarves.  Good Luck!

3. Stick with your friends!  It is SO easy to get lost in the sea of boys that is Wabash, and let’s face it, we prefer the DePauw “Dannys” anyway.  Stick with peeps from DePauwty.  You don’t want to miss your ride back to DePauw, because win or lose, going out will be so much fun Saturday night here on campus!

4. Black & Gold.  Head to the bookstore now while everything is still in stock.  Get a new sweatshirt, t-shirt, some tattoos for your face–whatever floats your boat!  Monon is an occasion that demands black & gold.

5.  With that being said, listen to Wiz Khalifa’s song “Black and Yellow”.  It sounds so lame, but trust us, hearing that song on Monon day will instantly encourage any DePauw crowd to have a great time!

6.  Get all your homework done early.  We cannot understand why professors don’t treat Monon as a holiday like the students do.  So many of your professors will assign tests, papers or presentations for that Monday or Tuesday after Monon, so make sure you get it done early.  Come that Sunday, the last thing you will want to be doing is studying in Roy.

7.  Pace yourself.  Not to get too tacky or anything, but Monon is a marathon, not a sprint.  Festivities start early and end late!  So drink/eat/socialize accordingly!

8.  Take advantage of your friends and their parent’s tailgates!  We won’t name her because we don’t want you to go there and steal all of the food, but one of our best friend’s parents throw the BEST tailgate!  Honestly, it makes our whole entire Monon experience monumentally better because they provide drinks and, more importantly, food to get us through the entire day.  Plus, parents love to see college kids having the time of their lives!  It brings them back to their glory days.

9.  Strategize when you call Marvin’s.  We know this can be VERY difficult, but it is so necessary.  Since it is such a big weekend for alumni to come visit, literally EVERYONE is ordering Marvin’s late night.  Here is our advice, order your Marvin’s before you go out and then save it for when you get back at night.  This is key, because otherwise you will be up until 6 am waiting for your GCB, Frank’s Fries, Mac Bites, pepperoni pizza and 7 ranch cups to be delivered.

10.  The Monon bell game has been around since 1932!  This tradition is so much more than just a football game!
