Dear Debbie,

There’s five weeks left until graduation, and I still don’t have a job. I have many friends that had gotten great job offers over the summer after graduating but at this point I’m starting to get anxious. I’ve been applying and have had interviews but nothing has stuck so far. So my question is, how can I improve my chances of getting a job?

Sincerely,

Unemployed

Dear Unemployed,

You and I, and so many others, are in the same boat. Something to also keep in mind is that these tips also work for internships. One huge advantage of going to a small liberal arts school is the amazing alumni network. Use it to your advantage!! Have the Hubbard Center connect you with people in your interested field or even ask your professors; you’d be surprised whom they know! Don’t be afraid to get out as many applications as you can even when you don’t think you’re totally qualified. The worst that can happen is they say no, which leaves you in the same position as if you’d never applied.  You could call ahead and see if there’s an opening in the company because putting a voice or a face to a name makes the world of difference. Updating your LinkedIn profile (or making one) is another good way to follow companies and see if they have any new openings. It’s not about what you do but whom you know. Make sure to use those network connections to your advantage and good luck!

Best,
