Most people come back to school hoping to ease into the semester. But that’s not the case for this year’s musical cast. In one month, actors in The Addams Family spend hours of their days rehearsing the eerie and entertaining show. Knowing that my roommate, Carly Mankin, will star as Pugsley, I decided to ask about her experience with musical theatre and with this particular production.

HC: Hi Carly! Thanks for talking with me today. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

CM: I am a sophomore and I am planning on majoring in psychology with a minor in Spanish.

HC: How did you first get involved with musical theatre?

CM: I first got involved in musical theatre in 7th grade and I was hooked ever since. I have always really loved to sing and dance and musical theatre was a great way to express that.

HC: What’s your favorite role you’ve ever played and why?

CM: As seemingly embarrassing as it was, I loved playing Karen the Computer in The SpongeBob Musical. I really enjoyed getting into a character that wasn’t the good guy, in a show full of extremely positive characters. The music was also really fun and was written by a lot of famous musicians.

HC: How did you decide to get involved with Addams Family?

CM: I’ve been involved with a lot of the shows here since my freshman year, and when I found out we were doing Addams Family I knew I had to audition and be involved. I’ve also worked with Susan Anthony, our director, before and she is so great that I knew not being part of this show would be a mistake.

HC: Who’s a character to look out for in the show?

CM: I feel like Lurch is honestly a character to look out for in the show. Despite the fact that he doesn’t talk, his reactions and what he does throughout the background really adds to the ambiance of the family.

HC: What are the dates? And how can we get tickets?

CM: The dates are September 28, 29, 30 at 7:00 pm and October 1 at 3:00 pm. You can get tickets by going to the DePauw Theatre page on the DePauw website. Tickets are free for students so you just have to reserve them in advance!

HC: Thank you so much, Carly. Break a leg!
