4 Sundays to Summer: How to Make the Most of Your Time at DePauw

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

It’s post Spring Break, you feel refreshed (and maybe a little tanner) and it’s already time to dive back into schoolwork. Before you roll your eyes, remember that we, DePauw students, only have about 5 weeks left at the ‘Castle before summer. Yes, that means the work is almost over but it also marks the end of another academic year and saying goodbye to your friends and sorority sisters for a little while. Have you accomplished everything that you wanted to this year? Are you trying to fit four weekends of formals, philanthropy events, mom’s weekends, and Little Five into your calendar? Here are some tips on how to do it all and keep your sanity.

Merge Your Social Calendar with Your Academic Planner:

As we are all aware, social commitments are at least as important as tests are around here. This means that you should treat them equally and prepare accordingly. First, mark all events you plan to attend and all tests you are aware of on your schedule as early as possible. Approximate how much time your school assignments will take and pencil them in (with some flexibility) so that you have alloted enough time to prepare for that test on the Monday after formal. Spread studying out over a few days so you have time to ask questions or work with a partner on review problems. If you get your work done during the week, the weekend can be stress- free! By creating an awareness of your commitments, you are more likely to execute them on time and more successfully.

Start Every Day With a Plan:

As a matter of fact, think about it before you go to sleep at night. What do you have to do in the morning? What time should you set your alarm if you want to workout and shower before class? Asking these questions will set you up to accomplish what needs to be done on any given day. If you have 30 minutes per meal, 3 hours of class, 4 hours of homework, and a short meeting then you have accounted for only 8 hours of your day. While I am just assuming, most people have at least another 6-8 hours to use up. Why not make the most of it? Think about what else you can schedule that day if you find yourself with free time on your hands.

Don’t Forget to Schedule Time for Yourself:

That free time I was just talking about? Make sure that you give some time back to yourself. Relaxation is KEY during a busy week because it gives your brain and body time to de-stress and function at a higher level than a tired, worn- out person. It’s a guilt- free reason to stay in bed for an extra hour, watch an episode or three of your favorite TV show, or go on a last minute Dairy Castle run with friends. You can’t take care of everything you’re responsible for if you don’t take care of yourself!

So, settle in for the last stretch and try to make the most of it while you’re still here. Juggle work with weekend plans like a pro and take time to relax and have fun with friends in the meantime. When these last few weeks fly by, you’ll be ready to juggle the rest of your world too.
