I Have No Idea What I’m Doing With My Life and That’s Totally Okay

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

I feel like at this stage in my life, everyone has life figured out. They know who they are, who they want to be, and what they plan on doing for the rest of their life. I have rather, been in a perpetual state of confusion since starting college. I started at DePaul as a film major, then switched to Communication and Media. I switch the profession I want to be constantly ranging from a lawyer, to a screenwriter. I have learned over time that this is completely okay! Here are some reasons why:

As much as people in college seem to have their s**t together, they really REALLY don’t

I have learned over the years that no matter what, people are never 100% completely okay in college. I have known so many great individuals, who know exactly what they want. However, once they really getting to know them, I realize they are always struggling with something. Everyone in college struggles. People could say they want to be a doctor throughout their four years of college, but once they leave, plans change. You will figure it out, maybe just not now.

Live your best life…worry later

College is one of the only times in your life where you can experience complete independence, without having the responsibility of a 9-5 job. Please use the independence to try new things, meet new people, and have fun. I have learned that sitting on the third floor of the library questioning my life choices leads to more stress. Everything will be figured out in time.

Being comfortable with the uncomfortable is a life skill

There are going to be many times in our lives where we simply do not know the answer. We might never know the answer. I learned to be comfortable with the fact that I do not know what I want to do. While that is scary, I’m learning how to process acceptance with it. In time, I will figure out what I want to do, but now I am exploring my options.

You can do whatever your heart desires

Society tells us a lot that we have to go through with a certain major and continue to do that for the rest of our lives. However, majority of people switch their careers multiple times. Go with your heart, sometimes things change. Roll with it. The good thing about not having it all figured out is that anything is possible. You can be whatever you want. That sounds pretty f**king cool to me.

Do not compare yourself to other people’s successes or failures. I promise you that you will figure it out. So while my lack of a clue may stress people out, I like having every option open to me.

Hi! My name Georgia Coriell and I am sophomore at DePaul. I am studying Communication and Media with a minor in Television Production. In my free time, I enjoy watching Netflix, listening to music, writing, and taking photos.
