3 Awesome TV Shows Created By Awesome Women

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePaul chapter.

I’m always down to support women doing awesome things. Here are three awesome TV shows to watch created by awesome women:

1. Broad City

Le duh. If you’re not watching Broad City, what are you watching? Broad City is a sitcom created by NYU grads, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. The show follows the two best friends through their trials and tribulations as two twenty year olds traipsing around New York City. I laugh out loud every single episode. It’s noncommittal and hilarious. Not to mention, Abbi and Ilana have been huge political activists the past couple years. They’re proud feminists and always ready to call out the unpleasant truths and injustices that lie within our government and society. Watch Broad City every Wednesday on Comedy Central (for free!).

2. Insecure

Created by Issa Rae, Insecure follows the lives of two best friends living in LA. You might know Issa Rae as the creator of the highly successful web-series, Awkward Black Girl. Insecure  addresses social and racial issues through the eyes of two young, black women, in addition to following the awkward experiences they encounter in their everyday lives. The show also spotlights music created by Indie and established artists of color. Issa Rae has spoken out about white privilege, racial inequalities, and many more social justice issues in the media as well as in her show. She is an activist for social justice and equality and prominent supporter of artists of color. You can watch Insecure on HBO.

3. Big Little Lies

BLL is dramatic, suspenseful, scary, stress-inducing, and heartbreaking. The show is predominantly about the lives of three women, and their friendships and relationships with the other men and women in their town. Each character lives a very different life from the other, but they all come together to support one another. The show demonstrates the power of women and how nothing can defeat a group of women working together. Who doesn’t love that? The show is a murder mystery, which makes it perfect for fall, and it’s only eight episodes. I was literally on the edge of my seat every episode and was so addicted to the plot. The cast is iconic: Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Sheilene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, if you aren’t convinced yet-you’re nuts. All of these women are successful and influential in their own ways. They are pioneers in Hollywood, each with their own plethora of awards and nominations, in addition to whatever other business ventures they might take on (think Reese’s clothing line, Draper James). They’re mothers, they’re actresses, they’re wives, they’re sisters, they’re friends, they’re business women, and they’re killing it. Big Little Lies is available to watch on HBO.
