5 Reasons to Get Over Him

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Denison chapter.

When I really like someone and it doesn’t work out, I find that it takes me a long time to get over him.  It doesn’t matter if it ended badly and we don’t speak anymore, I still find myself thinking about him constantly and wondering what went wrong. I know I’m not alone.  We all have trouble getting over guys.  However, it’s not worth our time and energy to pine for guys who clearly don’t care as much about us as we do about them.  There are more reasons to get over that loser than to keep thinking about him.

1.     He probably isn’t as good looking as you think…

Sometimes we need a second opinion from friends to see what we aren’t seeing.  Friends are like the mirror you don’t want to look in when it comes to boys.  They can judge the boy because they’re not the ones falling for him.  They’ll make you see that he’s really doesn’t look like Ryan Gosling, even if you’re convinced that he does.

2.     Let’s face it, he most likely will not be that famous photographer/musician in

the future…

Despite how talented you think he is (and he may be), it does not mean that he is going to be a superstar and it definitely does not mean that he’s a nice guy.  Put your star struck feeling away and see him for what he really is: a photo-shop user or a garage band recorder. Not impressive.

3.     He is not “the nicest guy ever,” like everyone says…

That’s just his surface.  You used to see that side of him too, until you got to know him on a more personal level. Yes, he is still a nice guy but he also did some pretty hurtful things to you. Remember when he never called like he said would, remember when he ignored you at a party? Is he still “the nicest guy ever?”  The answer is no.

4.     The girl who does end up with him is probably better for him anyway…

I always find myself a little jealous once I see that he is with someone else; however, I stop and think that there was a reason I didn’t work well with him and there is a reason that she does.  There’s no need to blame the new girl; she doesn’t know anything about your relationship with him.  A new girl in his life also gives you the opportunity to have a new guy in your life.  There will be a reason your new guy works well with you.

5.     You learned a lesson from him…

We learn lessons from every experience we have.  Whether you’re in the “I hate him” phase or the “I’m over it” phase, you will eventually realize that he taught you something.  Sometimes the lesson is as simple as never ever fall for those beautiful green eyes again.  Sometimes the lesson is more complex like, don’t let him control your happiness.  Whatever it is that you learned from the experience with him, take the knowledge you gained and use it for the wonderful new guy who could walk into your life any minute now.
