As an early 00s Television Drama Geek who spends the majority of her time watching re-runs of The O.C, Dawson’s Creek (that’s more 90s), and all the shows that had a life of their own, I can safely say that Gilmore Girls is an anthem and anchor of that era in so many ways. I think it uniquely captures the paradigm of inculcating drama with conversations that are reflective and provide space to move on in life. However, what draws most people in apart from Stars Hollow and the aesthetics is the FOOD which is why I have curated some of the recipes that one can indulge in time and again and actually feel like they are celebrating Life. Lorelei and Rory are the literal epitome of celebration, though they are more on the overindulgence side of it but that hardly matters. So here are some of the recipes in no particular order and I hope you enjoy these.

1. Coffee

The series is 90% coffee with the duo caffeinating 3-4 times a day or even more. Though they mostly drink black coffee at Luke’s Diner, I’ve seen them draw variations from time to time. I don’t know if it’s my knack for detail, my personal obsession with caffeine, or everything I love but there was this one time Lorelei made coffee with Ovaltine and it’s actually pretty good. All you need is:

  • Ovaltine
  • Coffee
  • Water

Add a shot of espresso to water and add 1 tsp of Ovaltine and your favorite creamer if you wish to. I personally love oat milk and even macadamia milk but you can add anything you want to and if you don’t have ovaltine and just go for instant, then also you’re good to go!

2. Tater Tots

This is a part of their staple and I personally love tater tots too! You will need:

  • 2 russet potatoes
  • Fresh parsley
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp seasoned pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 cups peanut oil

Boil the potatoes and shred them. Add parsley, flour, salt, seasoned pepper, onion powder, and form nugget shapes out of the potatoes. Oil the pan using peanut oil and deep fry the potatoes for 5-7 minutes until they turn golden brown and that’s about it!

3. Blueberry Danish

This is a go-to in a lot of episodes alongside coffee. To go about this, you will need:

  • Froze puff pastry
  • Cream cheese
  • Granulated sugar
  • Lemon juice
  • Vanilla extract
  • Blueberry jam
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Eggs

Preheat the oven to 400° F. Begin by cutting the pastries and poking holes around the middle of it. In a bowl, combine the cream cheese, lemon juice, sugar, and vanilla extract. Spread the mixture in the middle of the pastry and top it up with a blueberry and jam mixture. Use an egg wash to brush the sides of the pastry. Bake for about 15-18 minutes and that’s it!

4. Orange Chicken

Another one of the classics for which you will need:

  • Chicken thighs
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp white pepper
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 2 tbsp oil

For the chicken sauce:

  • 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes
  • 1/2 tsp ginger
  • 1 tbsp garlic
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

Cut up the chicken thighs into small cubes and place it separately. In the meantime, mix the salt, white pepper, cornstarch, flour, egg, water, and oil. Add the chicken cubes into the mixture and let it cool for 30 minutes. Fry it for about 6 minutes. In another pan cook together the vegetable oil, chili flakes, ginger, garlic, sugar, brown sugar, orange juice, vinegar, soy sauce, more water, and cornstarch. Add the chicken and let it cook for a couple of minutes then you’re good to go!

5. Snack Mix

This is one of my absolute favorites because you can throw in whatever you like. It is the easiest and one of the most fun ones for a movie night. This does not have a standard recipe so feel free to make your own snack bowl and add as many pecans, pretzels, chocolates, marshmallows, nuts, and seeds you want. You can alter this one with healthier alternatives too.

Although there are so many recipes, these are still very good and I hope you give these a go and get further inspired to try more!
