Ranking the Doctors of “Grey’s Anatomy”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Delaware chapter.

One of the best shows on TV is “Grey’s Anatomy,” and no one captures our interest more than Meredith Grey. But is Meredith the best character on her own show? Here’s my ranking of the main characters.

33. Preston Burke

Burke sucks. He leaves Cristina at the altar and acts like it’s nothing. He didn’t do good with competition and worried more about himself than his patients.

32. Izzie Stevens

I used to not mind Izzie, but she is really bad. She cuts the LVAD wire, helps George cheat and has Alex’s kids without telling him. She’s supposed to be the kind one, but most of her decisions are selfish.

31. Erica Hahn

Hahn was annoying and supposed to be a villain we didn’t like. It worked – people didn’t like her. Plus, that bedroom scene with her and Callie is so cringe.

30. Winston Ndugu

Winston has good potential for being such a new character. I think he’s a good boyfriend for Maggie, but we’ve only seen him in very little so far. He’s just Maggie’s boyfriend and doesn’t have much character development yet, so he’s #30.

29. Thomas Koracick

Koracick is supposed to be unlikeable, so it’s hard to put him higher. He starts a relationship with a pregnant Teddy and sleeps with her before her wedding. He’s cocky, arrogant and can’t admit when someone is better than him.

28. Leah Murphy

Leah always acts like a victim and doesn’t expect her actions to have consequences. She’s whiny and barely a character.

27. Shane Ross

I honestly forgot who Ross was. He didn’t do anything major. All I remember of his character was when he left with Cristina.

26. April Kenner

Her one character trait was Jesus. She did go through one of the hardest things possible with the stillbirth, but her character was just annoying. I still don’t get why she left Matthew and went with Avery, especially because her and Avery barely had a relationship.

25. Owen Hunt

At first, I loved Owen. He came in all cool as a soldier. Then, he ruined Cristina and Amelia. He cheated like it was nothing and tried to force Cristina to have a baby she never wanted.  And then, when he gets cheated on, it’s so unforgivable. He’s a hypocrite.

24. Amelia Shepherd

Amelia is so naive and always blames her actions on something other than herself. She’s really just there to replace Derek, and it comes off as her being a child.

23. Teddy Altman

Teddy is here because I love her whenever she’s not obsessing over Owen. Her storyline with Henry and her flashbacks with her friend Allison were great, but her and Owen are toxic. Their relationship ruins her character.

22. Jo Wilson

Wilson before season 15 was great. She was good for Alex and a badass. After season 15, she never really recovered as a character and became depressing. It also seemed out of character when she didn’t even fight for Alex when left her.

21. Nathan Riggs

Nathan was a great character for the sole purpose of helping Meredith move on from Derek. He didn’t really do much besides be a beginning for new love in Meredith’s life, but I felt that their relationship was genuine and that he truly understood her.

20. Ben Warren

His relationship with Bailey is probably one of my favorites. I don’t get why he kept changing professions, but he was a good doctor until that accident in the hallway. He became too reckless before becoming a firefighter.

19. Maggie Pierce

It’s the kinda incest for me. Her relationship with Avery didn’t make sense. She was supposed to replace Yang as Meredith’s sister, but it felt forced. She gets points for punching that one lady though.

18. Levi Schmitt

I mean he’s the one who gets to kiss Nico, so I think he’s really winning at life. I think he’s had good character development from being the guy who dropped his glasses into someone.

17. Stephanie Edwards

She was a great doctor, but got dealt a bad hand with Jackson leaving her for April and Jo getting more attention than her. She really was a star who didn’t get to shine as bright as she should have.

16. Andrew DeLuca

When he speaks Italian, I’m all for it. I don’t think he’s a good match for Meredith, especially because he was sleeping with her sister beforehand. I think his mental illness is very well portrayed but has harmed his reliability as a character.

15. Alex Karev

Alex used to be my number one. His character development was amazing, and it was thrown away for Izzie. His exit ruined his character, and I can’t believe he’d leave Jo like that.

14. Richard Webber

Webber is great. He really stepped up as a father figure for Meredith and Maggie. His journey being a recovering alcoholic is great, but it’s his relationship with Ellis that really sets him back.

13. Derek Shepherd

McDreamy is a dream of a man. But there are little moments, such as when he hit Meredith’s ring with a baseball bat, that make him less of a McDreamy and more of a McAss. There is no one better for Meredith though.

12. Atticus Lincoln

Link was a great addition to the cast. He’s one of the few non-toxic males on the show. He hasn’t done anything bad yet. Plus, it was so adorable when he cut his hair for the kid.

11. Cormac Hayes

I think Hayes was a good replacement for Alex, and I think he’s the best match for Meredith yet. He knows what it’s like to be in Meredith’s shoes, and he’s not in her face like DeLuca. He has little development so far, but he is unproblematic and good for Meredith.

10. Jackson Avery

At first, he was just a rich kid trying to prove that he was more than money. He became an amazing surgeon, and his relationship with Sloan was golden. Plus, he’s hot.

9. Cristina Yang

Yang is probably the best surgeon out of everyone. Her downfall is her relationship with men. The doesn’t want kids storyline kept getting used and played out. Her relationship with Owen really knocked her down a few pegs, but overall she’s iconic.

8. Addison Montgomery

There is no more iconic of an entrance than Addison’s. Once she stopped being with Derek, she became a queen, and I have a love for Kate Walsh. She got her own show for a reason.

7. Arizona Robbins

She is the definition of looks like a cinnamon roll, acts like a cinnamon roll. Every time she’s on screen, I get a smile. Her and Callie’s relationship was also amazing until Arizona cheated.

6. Callie Torres

Her journey was immaculate. Callie coming to terms with her sexuality and her relationship with Sloan made her one of the best characters. It’s the relationship with Penny that’s meh to me.

5. Miranda Bailey

There’s a reason why Bailey has been around for so long. Bailey is the heart of that hospital, and it shows. She’s just legendary.

4. Meredith Grey

Meredith is elite. After all, it is her show. She’s been through so much pain and loss. Mer is probably one of the strongest characters, but for so long, it was her being all about McDreamy. She became such a better character after he left.

3. Mark Sloan

I love Mark Sloan. His relationship with Lexie is elite. Sloan as a dad to Sofia is amazing. His creation of the iconic Plastic Pose was legendary. He went from being the dirty mistress to the king that he was meant to be.

2. Lexie Grey

Lil Grey was taken from us too soon. She was going to be an amazing surgeon. Her teach me moment with Mark was so much better than Mer’s pick me moment with Derek. Lexie is my queen.

1. George O’Malley

George is the best and will always be the best. His death was so heartbreaking, and the show hasn’t been the same since. O’Malley is kind, funny and sweet. He was always there for his friends. There’s a reason why Bailey named her son after him.

Here’s to all of us going to rewatch “Grey’s Anatomy” for the hundredth time instead of something new!
