Make Your Spring Break Vacation a Staycation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Delaware chapter.

The students at UD are in need of a break and we are counting our lucky stars that spring break is upon us. We have all gone through our first round of exams, papers, and projects and our brains feel like mush. If you have been on campus since Winter Session, this break feels a few weeks overdue. A lot of my friends are flocking to warmer lands like Cancun, The Bahamas, or Disney. I’m headed to Maryland. I’m going home with no extravagant plans and I couldn’t be more excited. I have a handful of things I wish to accomplish, but there is no deadline or structure to “the list”. I know I can’t be the only one going home for the week so I have to decided to share some of the things on my “To Do List” and encourage you all to join me.

Read a book

We spend all semester reading textbooks, page after page, filling our heads with knowledge that we may or may not remember after the exam. Go to the closest bookshelf and pick out the book you got for a birthday or picked up on a rainy day, but never had time to read. Enjoy reading it cover to cover with no interruption and don’t feel guilty if it isn’t entirely absorbed. The more entertaining the book, the better!

Take a nap

I, we, deserve it. The amount of sleep we lose over exams, projects, and extracurriculars is nonsensical and frankly unhealthy. An entire day can be dedicated to staying in bed getting more hours of sleep than I have seen all semester. By the end of the week we will feel refreshed and rejuvenated. With a few good nights sleep under our belts, we will be ready to take on the rest of the semester.

Take a day trip

Your spring break trip doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive. A small road trip to a city, state park, or even the next town over can be a fun adventure and relatively inexpensive. A decent amount of UD students live in the Tri State area with easy access to large cities such as Philadelphia, New York City, or Washington DC. I’m headed up to Manhattan for a day of exploring and eating at all of my favorite spots.

Spend time with your mom

She misses you everyday when you’re away at school. I know my mother sure does. Because of UD’s ridiculously long winter break all of your friends are probably back at school. So the only person available to hang out is your mom and for the lucky people, your dog. My mom and I have a mother/daughter day planned that will top any other mother/daughter day before.

Clean out your closet

It is finally getting warm on campus and I plan on switching out my fall/winter wardrobe for my spring/summer wardrobe. While you are doing this, make large piles of clothes to donate. My mom will be proud and other people will appreciate my unused clothing more than I do. Nothing is more fitting than spring-cleaning during spring break.

The week will be filled with small yet fulfilling activities that are sure to keep you entertained. I hope you found some inspiration from this list that will aid in your “staycation” endeavors!
