Dealing With Career Stress in Your 20s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Dalhousie chapter.

Your 20s can be an exhilarating time filled with dreams, new experiences and the promise of a bright future. However, this period can also bring its fair share of challenges – particularly when it comes to building a career. As young people, many of us often encounter various sources of stress that can impact our well being.

As I sit here in my third year of university, already having changed my degree once, I have no idea what my professional future will look like. This feeling is quite familiar to several students and it is both scary and uncomfortable. The number of factors to be considered feel endless, and reflecting upon our finances without losing sight of what will bring us joy can be very daunting. The thought of making the right decision is overwhelming but there is comfort in the mere reality that this uncertainty is extremely common. However, we can help ourselves remain afloat as we navigate the unknown.

Taking care of yourself is one of the best ways to help with such stress. Between lectures, assignments and looming deadlines, self-care sometimes gets pushed aside. I have learned that taking moments to recharge – whether it’s a walk in the park, a cup of tea, or just dancing to my favourite song – has a significant impact on my ability to manage stress.

Another stress-management tactic that I have found useful is talking to people who are specifically equipped to help in these areas. I’ve spoken with career counselors who have helped me explore my options and develop plans. Similarly, connecting with professors and mentors has been quite beneficial. They have often provided me with advice and guidance that I otherwise would never have known. Their insights can often be a beacon of light in moments of uncertainty.

Yet through much of the discomfort I have experienced, I realized that it is important to check in with yourself and reflect. Regularly pausing to assess my goals, passions and experiences keeps me aligned with where I want to go. When you allow yourself to take a step back and let your subconscious create an image of your ideal future, it’s incredible what you may discover. Whether you make note of this in a journal, think about it, or simply just speak it aloud, you will seek clarity.

Above all, I want to emphasize that it is completely understandable to change your mind at any point in your life – in fact, I like to think it’s expected. We are so young and a lot can change in someone from one year to the next, let alone from the beginning of adult life to the end. If you find yourself unhappy with a choice you made in the past, explore new options and find what works best for you.

Your 20s are a time of growth, discovery and opportunity. While career stress is a natural part of this phase, implementing these strategies can empower young people to navigate challenges with resilience and determination. Remember that you have a community of support around you and with the right tools and mindset, you can transform career stress into a stepping stone toward a successful and fulfilling future.
