HCCWU Editor’s Picks: This is WEIRDD

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CWU chapter.

WEIRDD is an acronym that Lexie Lombard (@lexie) started as a series on her YouTube channel in 2016.  I personally love watching her monthly videos and think it is such a creative way to share what you are loving.  So I want to start out the new year sharing what I am loving with your readers with what I’ve been wearing/watching, eating, impressed by, reading, downloading and doing each month.

Wearing/Watching

This month I have been watching (more like binge-watching) Mindhunter on Netflix.  Mindhunter is an American crime thriller Netflix Original based on the true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The show revolves around the FBI behavioral science unit within the Training Division of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia in the late 70s. Throughout, they interview imprisoned serial killers to understand how they think, with the hope of applying this knowledge to solve ongoing cases. If you are into true crime anything this is the show for you, and should definitely be added to your watch list.  This month I have been wearing out my white Nike Air Force 1 (just like every other girl) but what can I say? They are so comfy and make any outfit cute!

Eating

Now, I love iced coffee as much as the next person, but recently coffee has not been nice to my stomach.  I had been on a hunt to find something that would still fill me with caffeine but not make me sick throughout the day. I started drinking caffeinated teas, for a while and then I rediscovered matcha lattes.  This used to be my go-to drink before I was a huge coffee drinker, and let me tell you it is a game-changer. Matcha is a powder form of green tea, that has about the same amount of caffeine as a brewed cup of coffee, or about half as much as an espresso.  However, the thing with matcha is that it is more energizing and longer-lasting than a coffee rush because of the amino acid L-Theanine. This amino acid slows the release of caffeine and has a calming, relaxing effect so you don’t get the jitters and shakes! My new favorite way to make it at home (and save $6 every day) is to make it with oat milk and honey!

Impressed By

This month I have been impressed by the Not Your Mother’s Triple Threat Brunette Blue Shampoo.  If you have ever heard of blondies using purple shampoo to take the brassy color out of their hair, this blue shampoo does the same for brunettes by eliminating the orange/ red hues from the hair.  I am a natural brunette with light brown hair and natural highlights but I prefer my hair to be more cool-toned. Before I would achieve this with a classic box dye, but my hair is finally back to its true natural color, but is still a bit too orange for my liking.  I wanted to find a way to fix this without turning back to the dyes, so I did some research. I love the brand NYM (a little too much) and when I found this newly released product I HAD to try it and let me tell you I love it. I just got the shampoo to test it out and after about a week and a half, I have started to see a difference in my hair!  Because I only use shampoo on the roots of my dry hair I have seen most of the change on the top of my head and less on my ends so my next mission is to try out the conditioner to see if it will help out overall. Did I mention that the shampoo and conditioner are only $8 each at Ulta? Yeah, go get your hands on some girl!

Reading

Starting your morning off right is always a perfect way to set up for a good day. An easy way to start off your morning is with some “me time”, self-care, meditation, whatever you are into. I like to start the morning by reading a devotional and I just started a new daily devotional called New Morning Mercies by Paul Tripp.  Including 365 gospel-centered devotions for the whole year, New Morning Mercies was written to strengthen you day-after-day with true encouragement for the Christian life. If this type of book isn’t quite up your alley then I have also been reading When Life Gives You Lululemons. This book is a Devil Wears Prada sequel following Emily Charlton post-Miranda Priestly, but still full of juicy high life drama.

Downloading

Now with this next one, I might be a little late to the game because this song came out 6 months ago, but recently I have been listening to “July” by Noah Cyrus on repeat.  According to Billboard, “July is a folk-infused ballad in which she reflects on the continuous cycle of a toxic relationship, with chill-inducing harmonies layered over simple acoustic instrumentation allow the song’s contemplative lyrics to take center stage. More or less, you will fall into your feels, deep.

Doing

Ever since we were little we have been told to take our vitamins, right? Some people have a good habit of this and others don’t (I am part of the ‘don’ts’)  Recently, all the rage among influencers has been how amazing collagen is for you. The most popular right now is collagen peptides that you are able to take in many forms such as powder mixed into drinks, capsules or in multivitamin supplements. I was hesitant to hop on this train because of the price, but I soon caved and I am never looking back.  My skin has never been so clear or soft and my body feels better overall. Collagen is best known for helping hair, skin, and nails, joint health and anti-aging. This is a habit I will not be breaking soon, even if it breaks my bank.

What are some of your favorite things this month? Let us know, and if you try any of these out yourself!
