The one thing every writer dreads, you sit down to write, write a sentence or two, and then your mind goes completely blank. As a psychology major, I experience writer’s block regularly. From writing research papers every quarter to sometimes drafting bibliographies, I understand firsthand the frustrations that are associated with writer’s block.

It is incredibly frustrating to have a good idea of what you want to write, only to have that idea slip away when it comes time to write. Fortunately, there are many ways of combating writer’s block, and each way will surely benefit you when you are writing your next essay.

Here are the strategies I use when I experience writer’s block.

1. make an outline

What I find to be helpful before writing an essay is drafting an outline. What helps me when I am drafting an outline is writing down what I will be addressing in each section of my essay. Usually what I do for my outlines is section off a piece of paper with an introduction section, a body, and then a conclusion section.

Next, I write down the main points that I will be addressing in each section. In addition to this, I will also include any research I have found about my topic in each section. I find that by drafting an outline, I am able to plan out what I am going to include in each section of my essay.

2. Research infORMATION

Researching information on your topic before writing is one of the best ways to combat writer’s block. Not only does research provide a background of your topic, but it also introduces you to new perspectives that others have found about your topic.

By researching my topic, I find that I not only get a better understanding of my topic, but I also find that I can write about my topics using my own perspectives and ideas. Always take advantage of researching your topic before writing.

3. Seek advice

When I experience writer’s block, I find that by seeking advice from family and friends, I able get ideas on what to include in my writing. By asking family and friends to read my writing or asking for any suggestions, I find that I can incorporate new perspectives into my writing. Never hesitate to ask for help!

4. Take Breaks

Even the strongest of writers need a little self-care now and then! When I am experiencing writer’s block, I find going for a walk, taking a coffee break, and even a little skin care relieves my mind of any stress and helps me think about what I am writing.

After some much needed self-care, I find that I am able to incorporate more thought into my writing and I feel more confident about my ability to write. Whether your breaks involve reading, face masks, or taking a moment to appreciate nature, remember that your well-being takes priority!

Currently experiencing writer’s block? I hope that you take these strategies into consideration as you are writing. Be sure to take some time for yourselves as needed!
