Teen Drinking is Very Bad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CUA chapter.

About a week ago I came across an article that honestly gave me the chills. In this day and age of 24 hour news, we are constantly getting facts of a murder, robbery, all of the above…but no one was talking about this story that is more chilling then just meets the eye.

The article went like this, a beautiful, very intelligent, young girl was just dropped off by her parents from winter break. It’s her freshman year and only a few months before had written on her Facebook how she loved college and never wanted to leave. Like most of us, the week back from break is a time to let loose, be with friends, catch up and be stress-free before well a stress filled semester. Like any normal college student, she decided to go out with her friends, but before that she pre-gamed. She and her roommates each polsihed of a bottle of champgane. Afterwards, they filled up half a water bottle with cheap vodka and went to the house party. When they arrived, a friend a brought a large Grey Goose bottle filled with cheap vodka, in which her and her friends had drank as well. Her friends noticed she could barley walk and deicded it was best that her roommate and her go in a cab back home. Upon arriving back to her dorm, the cab driver had to her help the roommate bring her up to their dorm room and as they had gotten into the room the cab driver and the roommate proped her up on a bean bag chair. Her roommate then went to sleep shortly after that. The next morning her roommate noticed that not only was her roommate in the same postion as the night before, but she was stone cold, dead.

The sad truth is, drinking a bottle of wine or champagne by youself is the norm in college because lets face it drinks are expensive so its more of getting drunk before leaving to not have to then buy drinks at the bar, it’s the sad truth. Even with that being said, people will still buy shots or mixed drinks or if going to house parties bring a water bottle of something else as well. I think we all don’t know is how much alcohol can actually kill a person. I’ve never heard of a story where someone did not throw up or had just died, in their sleep from drinking too much. It was like this girl had been walking, alive and breathing and then just died in a matter of hours. Its also scary that being a senior, i’ve been in these situations with friends and being young adults no one teaches you or tells you that how to handle that situation or how much alcohol can actually kill you. I think also part of the reason is that kids under 21 who lets face it, if your in college, most not all or experimenting with alcohol and are afraid of getting in trouble if they do in fact need help. I think colleges havea responsibility to recognize this and educate kids their freshman year of college how to know the signs of too much alchohol, what should be done and who they should call. You cannot just expect kids to google that or research that on their own if they dont think it could ever happen to them or their friends. It was a truly devestating story that no parents should have to go through and that young girl should have never died.
