7 Reasons Why You Should Get A Tattoo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CUA chapter.

Long gone are the days when if a girl said “I have a tattoo” you would assume that she meant a butterfly tramp stamp, or her ex-boyfriends name on her boob. Tattoos are becoming much more prevalent in today’s society and they are a beautiful way to express yourself that every person should consider.

If you have been on the fence about whether or not to get that tatt, hopefully these reasons will be able to convince you to get inked.

1) The sense of empowerment.

From a feminist’s perspective, they are proof that women can handle anything. Also, disproving people’s expectations is awesome.

2) You will always have a fun fact to use for ice breakers.

So long as your tatt isn’t in a visible place, you can almost always win 3 Truths and a Lie.

3) People will automatically know how much of a badass you are.

They hurt, and they are a lifetime commitment. Not exactly for the faint of heart.

4) It is a short term pain.

Depending on where you get it, yes it can hurt incredibly. However the pain only lasts for the time it takes to get the tattoo, not long after, and there’s a killer endorphin rush.

5) They’re beautiful.

You are your own canvas and you can create anything you want.

6) They are becoming more accepted in our culture.

World famous models, like Cara Delevingne and Megan Fox are covered in tattoos but still make millions.

7) They can be a constant reminder of what is most important to you.

Getting a tattoo to commemorate a loved one or a struggle you have overcome makes it easier for you to keep them in your thoughts every day of your life

If you do decide to get one, here are some tips for your first trip to the parlour.

1) Do not settle for anything less than what you are in love with. When your artist draws up the actual trace for your tattoo make sure you are completely happy with it. Sometimes they will do their own interpretation of what you want which can turn out amazing, but do not hesitate to tell them if there is something you don’t like and want them to change.

2) Become friends with your tattoo artist. They are usually the coolest people, and having a conversation is a great way to take your mind off the pain. It’s not fun for either of you to sit in awkward silence.

3) Be warned, they are highly addicting and you will probably be back to get more.
