Swedish fashion is based on the idea that “less is more.” I try to follow this ideology and find myself wearing different variations of the same outfits. I will wear the same shirt multiple times in a week (as long as it’s clean) but change up my look each day with the magic of jewelry, layering, and accessories. So, with that being said, here are five items every girl should have in their wardrobe.
- Black Turtleneck
As a kid, I would throw a tantrum every time my mom recommended I wore anything but sparkly peace sign shirts, but now I swear by my black turtleneck. Whether you style it with a cute pair of jeans and your favorite pair of sneakers, or live your librarian dreams and use it as a base layer under a sweater vest, a black turtleneck is a classic piece every girl needs.
- Jean Jacket
In my opinion, jean jackets are undated and will never go out of style. I believe everyone, whatever gender or fashion aesthetic, looks amazing in a jean jacket. I wear my jean jacket over a sweatshirt when I’m feeling casual, on top of a sundress in the summer, with a tight crop top for a party, and any other opportunity I can. Before spending an unnecessary amount of money on a jean jacket, however, scrounge nearby thrift stores for a used treasure.
- Black Boots
Especially in mountain towns like Boulder, boots are a necessity. Instead of clogging around in your horrendous snow boots, I recommend opting for a pair of neutral boots that are both cute and warm. I love my black boots (from H&M) because they are not only snow-appropriate, but also can be styled in so many ways. Nothing is more boss than a woman with a killer outfit and sexy boots.
- Hoop Earrings
Every girl needs a pair of hoop earrings. Silver or gold, petite or shoulder-length, hoop earrings can be styled for every occasion and are my go-to accessory when my outfit needs a little sparkle. I personally have multiple pairs of hoops, ranging from dainty gold braided to bulky silver, so no matter what I’m wearing I will have the perfect earring. If you have more than one piercing, experiment with multiple hoops at once for an even bolder look.
- White Sweater
On the first day of school this semester, my roommates and I all walked into the kitchen wearing our white sweaters. I styled mine over a long blue dress, one of my roommates wore hers over ripped mom jeans, and my third roommate paired hers with a bright pair of corduroys. No matter your aesthetic, a white wool sweater is another go-to piece every successful woman needs.
Ever since I got rid of many of my “one-off pieces,” like bright sweaters and patterned pants that only match one other piece in my wardrobe, getting ready in the morning has not only gotten a whole lot easier, but has also made getting dressed much more fun. I still wear a pop of color every day, but by minimizing my closet, my fashion sense has become much more cohesive, probably because I recycle the same pieces weekly. What five items can you not live without?
