Boulder’s Secret Hot Spots: Food

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

Oh the places you’ll go. When I first got to Boulder over 3 years ago I went to all the places you’re suppose to go like Cheba Hut, Illegal Pete’s, Cosmo’s, Del Taco, etc. If you’re in your first or second year here and are already sick of typical Boulder restaurants, then check out these restaurants if you want to spice it up. Trust me, you will not regret it.

Where are the best breakfast joints and places for hangover cures? First up is the Village Coffee House (see picture!) This quaint, little restaurant is the spot for quick coffee and food. Providing breakfast and lunch, the staff is very attentive with remarkably cheap egg dishes, pancakes, French toast, and the best hash browns in town. Next on my secret hot spot list is the Walnut Café. With all menu items ranging from $3 to $8.75, I’ve been extremely satisfied with my experiences there. In addition to an extensive and creative breakfast and lunch items with pancakes such as “Blueberry Corn Bread” and “GrananaolaChocolate”, they are also an espresso bar with the most amazing coffee, chai, and tea drinks.

The next two secret hot spots are on the Hill and they both pertain to Asian food. The first and my favorite is Kim Food To Go located on Broadway and University. If you are craving spring rolls, fried rice, chicken and broccoli, or any sort of Vietnamese food, then this should be your first spot. They have the cheapest lunch for highest quality meal. Secondly, is a really secret spot located in the food court right on college between 14th and 13th called Thai Avenue. It has four out of five stars on Yelp.com, offers a unique variety of food (Basil and Sriracha fried rice), and is very authentic.

Lastly, we move onto secret spots for Mexican food. Efrain’s Mexican Restaurant has such hot food you will burn yourself if you touch the plate. It is incredibly dank and affordable, so it’s perfect for us college kids. It’s located pretty far up on Arapahoe and 63rd, so I’d recommend finding a friend with a car. Their enchiladas are to die for and they have fantastic green chile for those who want to crank up the heat. Even further than Efrain’s but also worth the trip is La Choza. Beloved by locals, they have incredibly tender meat to fill their delicious tacos and burritos. It’s super cheap and they only take cash, so remember that when you hit this one up.

Now that I’ve exposed a few secrets, I hope you enjoy these fine establishments and take advantage of the unique and delicious food options we have so close to us. So the next time your tummy starts growling, think back to these and broaden your horizons for the time you spend out here!
