5 Things to Consider Before Getting A Dog In College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

Everyone loves our furry friends, I mean, who doesn’t like coming home to all the love, attention and cuddles you could want? But, are you really ready to take on the commitment it takes to raise a dog? Here are five things to consider before you make the decision to get a dog while still in college.

Time Committment

Dogs take a lot of time to take care of, especially when they are puppies. Before you get a dog, consider the amount of time you have to commit, including walking and playing with your dog. If you get a puppy, make sure you have the time it takes to train and play with your pup inbetween class, clubs and work. Ask yourself this: are you willing to give up time with your friends to take care of your dog?

Space

Does your current living situation give enough space for your furry friend to run around?  If you live in the dorms, the answer is probably not, and even a small apartment might not leave enough space for your dog to live comfortably depending on the size of the dog. Ideally, dog owners live in an apartment complex with a dog park or a house with a backyard. Also make sure to check with your landlord that they allow dogs and if they require a monthly pet fee.

$$$

One of the biggest things to consider when getting a dog is the finacial responsibility that comes with them. Not only do you have to buy food and toys for your dog, you also need to pay for veterinary appointments that include wellness checks, vaccienes, nuter/spay procedures and sicknesses that your pup may encounter. If you are worried about how you are going to be able to pay for veterinary appointments, consider getting a wellness plan. Banfield Pet Hospital is located in almost every Petsmart and has affordable wellness plans for both puppies and dogs that includes their necessicary vaccienes, procedueres and even emergency visits. If there isn’t a Banfield near you, check with local veterinarian clinics in your area, chances are they also offer similar wellness plans.

Travel

Whether it’s a weekend getaway or spring break with the girls, you will need to make a plan for your dog. If you are planning to take your dog with you on trips, make sure your accomodations allow dogs and if there is an extra charge. Airlines will allow you to travel with your dog, however, typically it requires an extra charge and, considering how big your dog is, they will likely have to travel in the belly of the plane. If you plan on leaving your dog behind, make sure you make arrangements for where your dog will stay. Maybe you have a friend or family member who is willing to watch your dog for you. You can also put your dog in a pet hotel, ideally one that includes daily play time so your dog gets the exercise they need.  Petsmart also has a Pet Hotel for short trips, however, it quickly gets pricey after a few days.

Adoption

ADOPT, ADOPT, and, I cannot stress this enough, ADOPT! If you are considering getting a dog, go to your local shelter or adoption event before looking other places. Check the Humane Society or other local adoption agencies to see when they have visiting hours and adoption events.

If all of this information scares you and you don’t think you are ready to commit the time, energy and money it takes to raise a dog on your own, go to your local shelter and volunteer. If you want to see what raising a dog is like, offer to watch your friends dog next time they are out of town or become a foster mom for a dog until they find their forever home!

Best of luck finding your fur baby!
