Why You Should Be Watching Project Runway Season 16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cornell chapter.

Project Runway has been a part of my life since before I even knew what reality competition shows really were. I would just randomly turn it on to look at the clothes!

I feel like a lot of us have watched this show at some point in our lives, but it’s not the kind of TV program that many people really commit to. Instead, they just tune in to random seasons. The most recent season, which premiered in August, is really strong!

If you’re on the fence about whether to commit to this season, here are some reasons why this is the season to catch up on and continue with!

1. The designers

The 16 designers chosen for this season are all very talented! In previous years there have definitely been some obvious front-runners and throwaways, but this season there have been many episodes where it’s difficult to tell who’s in the top and who’s in the bottom, because their looks are so close in craftsmanship. Each designer brings their own style to the table, and I think it’s very interesting to see how their personalities and inspirations clash with the challenges to come up with some super creative looks.

2. The fashion

With great designers comes innovative fashion! Because each designer has a strong voice, they’ve been turning out some really cool looks so far. Whether you like the show for the reality show content or the actual clothes, I think both aspects are very satisfying this season. You’ll be both laughing and wishing you were able to purchase the outfits the designers put together in under 24 hours for your own personal closet.

3. The models

This season, the show features models of all different sizes. There’s a ton of diversity and an overall much more realistic perspective on real women’s bodies that other fashion shows typically don’t acknowledge. Plus, the show gives the models more of a voice so they can reflect on how the designers’ clothes makes them feel. They’re not just hangers for outrageous outfits, but also real people (with fun, interesting personalities) who are wearing the clothes!

4. The humor

There are quite a few characters on the show this season. The amount of hilarious one-liners the designers come up with under the incredible stresses of the workroom is insane. From sass to snark to sarcasm, these contestants have it all!

5. The friendships

This season there are a lot of really sweet friendships that form between the contestants. Even though they’re all competing, they’re very considerate of each other and try to help and learn from one another. I think this is really nice to see on the show, as it brings an element of groundedness and compassion to the otherwise intense competition.

Only six episodes have aired so far, so it’s very doable to catch up, or you can just start watching from this point forward! That’s the beauty of Project Runway—you can tune in whenever you want, and it’s always quality entertainment! And of course, you’ll want to watch for the adorable-ness of Swatch, the dog that’s basically the mascot for Mood Fabrics.

Let’s get watching! And as Tim Gunn says:
