Small But Impactful Steps to Turn Your Dream Job Into Reality

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Chicago chapter.

It’s complicated and takes a lot of hard work to land a spot at your ideal job, but it all starts with you. Follow these simple steps to get on the right track so you can eventually live out your dream in the real world.

Be in the right environment.

It all starts with you being surrounded by the places and things that inspire your mind. Seeing other like-minded people accomplish goals will motivate you to keep up with that hustle.

The setting around you should make you feel comfortable and as though you fit in. It should have opportunities relatable to your needs so you can continue or start to grow. Whether this means moving across the country, going to a different school or moving out of your current house and down the street, you will notice a huge shift in your life because your surrounding environment has a great impact on what you do from day to day, as well as in the long run.

Surround yourself with those that support you.

Negative energy is one of the worst things for goals because it can be so draining on your soul. If the people in your life don’t believe in what you want to do, they’ll hold you back until you gain the confidence to tell them otherwise. And even then, a part of you will always play their doubting words in your head over and over and eventually you’ll start to believe them.

If you have any of this negative energy in your life, remove it. A friendship may be lost, but you’ll gain such a refreshment on your mood that nothing can stop you then. Prove them wrong and show them what you’re capable of without them in your way.

Follow successful people in your field on social media.

It’s no secret we all have those public figures on Instagram who we compare our boring lives to. Social media can be so unhealthy if we keep focusing on the perfect persona these influencers portray online.

To get the best of what we see, follow people who are doing what you want to be doing. Those who have accomplished the goals you’re trying to accomplish, those who work where you want to work and those who ultimately live how you want to live. Scrolling through your feed and seeing those kinds of posts everyday will almost make you envy them, but in the best, and most motivating way possible.

Dress the part.

There’s not a better feeling than when you tell someone what you want to do in the future and they look at you and say, “I can totally see you doing that!”

If you don’t have any other plans at the moment, the first change you can make is your wardrobe. Embodying the look at your dream job will truly help you feel as though you’re on your way there. Walking down the street in the appropriate outfit can give you the imagination that you’re on your way into the office that you’re meant to be at.

Whether you want to be a professional athlete or a brain surgeon, start incorporating your favorite teams’ jerseys into your everyday outfits or walk around in scrubs while cleaning the house. Physically looking and feeling the part ultimately starts with you dressing the part.

Read.

Reading up on your dream job will come extremely handy as you start to work and have to discuss new matters. You’ll sound intelligent and trusting and can bring a new perspective to the table. Educate yourself on everything from past icons in the field to all the leading competitors. It’s also important to know as much as you can so learning new things comes easier. And, the more knowledge you have, the more confident you will also be going into interviews.

Watch TV shows, movies and videos dedicated to your field.

The entertainment industry is filled with inspiration we can watch at any given time. People living out our best lives on the big screen, teaching us lessons of what we should and shouldn’t do. TV Series, movies and even YouTubers give us an in depth look at all different kinds of jobs and story lines. Find one that speaks to you and put yourself in the character’s shoes, then let the cameras roll.

Envision yourself as who you hope to be in the future.

With dreams, come daydreams. As simple as it sounds, to know what career path you want to take, you should have a clear image in your head of what exactly that looks like. This way you can break it down and figure out what major steps it will take to get to that point.

If you don’t have a dream of going places in your career, you’ll never go there. Close your eyes and imagine your future self all you want. It will be a constant reminder that that’s what you want and will always be in the back of your mind until you make it.
