Winter is Coming: Cold Weather Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.
If you’re not a native New Yorker or from a cold area, this list of items for the incoming winter is exactly what you need. As a born and bred New Yorker, I have an idea of what’ll help you get through and not freeze.

1. A good coat
Not just a nice pea coat, but one that will insulate you so well that you will sweat outside. Depending on your budget, you might want to get two, in case one gets soaked, ripped, or broken – just so you’re never stuck coatless in the middle of a snowstorm.

2. Boots with traction/rain boots
Once rain and snow hit and it’s below freezing, they will quickly turn to ice on the streets. As someone familiar with falling on said ice, take it from me: it’s not fun. Get boots and shoes with traction. If you’re into jumping into snow piles in the park, you might want to invest in knee-high rain boots.

3. Gloves, hats, scarves, fleece tights, etc.
Crucial so that your important parts don’t get cold and uncomfortable!

4. Hot chocolate mix!
This is truly important (especially the marshmallow toppings). Whenever it’s a cold day make some hot chocolate, put it in a travel mug and be warm, toasty, and chocolatey throughout the day.

5. Lotion/Vaseline
I know it’s an unusual item to list, but once the cold comes and your skin gets dry and uncomfortable, you’ll be glad you’ve got lotion/Vaseline to make your skin feel comfortable again.

6. Layers, layers, layers
Or get a cuddle buddy to be with you 24/7.

Finally, once you’re ready, take advantage of the fun aspects of a New York winter! Go sledding and make snow angels in the parks; go to Jacque Torres for a cup of super rich hot chocolate; visit museums to warm up and stroll around; or ice skate in Rockefeller Center or Bryant Park. Do your best to stay warm and have a great winter!
