The Varsity Show: West End Preview Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Dying for the scoop on this year’s Varsity Show? Our Events Editor, Leora, stopped by West End Preview this Tuesday night for a sneak peek:

The first thing I wanted to do when I got back from class on Tuesday was to curl up in a fetal position and sleep for the next 24 hours, as I had just pulled an all-nighter (#Midterms).  I didn’t know if I was going to be functioning in time to see the Varsity Show: West End Preview. With the help of my friends and some sugary snacks (No, I don’t like coffee), I managed to stay awake and make my way to the Diana Event Oval in the pouring rain.

All I have to say is…I am so happy I stayed awake for this show! The Varsity Show: West End Preview provided just the pick-me-up I needed to keep me sane for the remainder of midterms week.

Between Henrietta Steventon, who plays the belligerently drunk CC professor and John Fisher and Emma Smith, who play the snooty prospective student parents and CC alumna, I was genuinely laughing out loud every other second, at the least.

Not only did the cast have me and the rest of the audience rolling on the floor laughing, but their seriously amazing singing, dancing and acting made me in awe of the talent that exists at our school. I don’t know if others take the time to appreciate this concept: The students who make up the cast and crew of the Varsity Show are not only extremely gifted in theater, but they also had to be intelligent enough to be admitted to this school. Some people just have it all, don’t they?!

As for the plot: I predict that the CC almuna (played by Fisher and Smith) will be the main characters of the story. In the preview, the uptight, snobby parents go on a tour of CC for their *future* daughter. They are horrified at how much the school has changed since they graduated. While on their tour, they hear about a BETA party happening that night and decide to attend (the father was a BETA brother back in the day) to relive their college years. Although the parents do not literally “go back in time,” I got a strong 17 Again vibe. Perhaps the parents will go to college again and learn that, not only has CC changed for the better, but that going to university again has changed them for the better.

Moral of the story? I cannot wait to see the full show in April!
