Is it Spring Yet?: How to Transition your Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Enough with dreary days of heavy down coats! Spring is finally on the cusp of making an appearance. As the grey slush of snow washes away, our closets call for major makeover. Although we’re all excited for 50+ degrees, picking out what to wear in this winter-spring period can be a real pain in the butt. Here are four rules of thumb for 2014’s chicest transition look.

1. Work your Outers

Outers are not only practical items to endure the cold, but also potential statement pieces. Especially in this tricky transition period, jackets are an indispensable part of your outfit. Pick out a leather jacket—black for a casually chic look and colors for more fun and funky air—or go for an eye-catching statement jacket to spice up your outfit.

2. Sneakers (oh and the Chanel bag doesn’t hurt!)

This year, it’s all about the nonchalant, carefree pairing of prim and sporty. The clean-cut wool coats, nice trousers and slip-on sneakers combo has never been more in. Thankfully, this new sneakers fad really works with the transition season where you’re still dealing with leftover slush in this crack of the pavement and that.

3. Accesories are essential

Can’t figure out if you should go with the winter or spring end of the spectrum? Play with your seasons by using accessories. If you’re just wearing a long sleeved shirt or a skirt, pair it with soft scarves or knit beanies to incorporate some warmth in your outfit.

4. Colors and Patterns

Yes, the last blow of winter remains, but we’ve got to stop with the monotone wardrobe. Have fun with pop colors and crazy patterns to show you’re ready for a new season! After all, there’s nothing spring-ier than florals.
