The Five People You Meet on the First Day of Classes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

The Overly Enthusiastic First-Year:

We’ve all been there — the first day of class at the most fantastic college in the world.  So, who are we to blame these energetic 18-year-olds? They all come with a freshly purchased backpacks, brand new binders, and notebooks that probably won’t be used after the first week, and they won’t shut up about NSOP. You probably won’t want to talk to them during the first month while they get used to New York, but all of that energy might make them an effective study buddy.

The Nonchalant Senior:

The absolute opposite of the first-years. They’re probably in this class because they heard it’s easy or need to fulfill a Nine Way, so don’t expect too much participation. As bored as they may look, this senior probably has some great Barnard stories and connections, so sit next to them and strike up a conversation. Who knows? They might be able to help you land a great internship.

The One in the Wrong Room:

They settle into a seat and, just as they’re about to bolt up with the realization that the first day of classes is a Tuesday, not a Monday, the professor greets the class and all hope is lost. They’re stuck. You watch them squirm and try to devise an escape plan, but there’s no hope. Once class ends, you’ll likely never see this person again.

The Teacher’s Pet:

While everyone else is still trying to make sure that they’re not “The One in the Wrong Room,” this classmate is asking the professor about their research and complimenting them on the syllabus. It’s good to make a connection with your professors (and your TAs if they’re the ones grading papers), but this behavior is just too much. This person has no chill, but they could come in handy during midterms and finals.

The Dream BFF:

There they are — that beautiful individual that you would always stare at from the patio outside of Liz’s Place. After all the time you spent last semester fangirling over this classmate, you’re finally in the same room as them and now’s your chance to talk. That’s right, it’s your girl-crush, your dream BFF, the person whose style you love and hair you envy. You might be intimidated at first but, here at HCB, we say go for it because, chances are, they think you’re cool too.
