Sometimes, we love watching TV shows just as much for their characters’ wardrobes as for the plots of the shows themselves! Here are five of our all-time favorite TV show closets of all time.

1. Pushing Daisies

This cult classic owes its charm in large part to its vibrant style. The show’s retro wardrobe rivals even that of Mad Men; it aired back in 2007, before it was cool to dress like a 1940s pinup girl (again). Charlotte Charles’ (Anna Friel) sundresses are not the only eccentric staple of the show; Olive (Kristen Chenoweth) knows how to put together a chic monochromatic ensemble, too. Even the men are stylish. Emerson Cod (Chi McBride) constantly dons his own knitwear, while Ned (Lee Pace) sticks to classic staples, like black tee shirts and white aprons. A viewer can even draw fashion inspiration from the vivid settings, whimsical music, and the colorful characters themselves.

2. Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks basically defines late 80’s/early 90’s fashion: oversized knitwear, bobby socks, oxfords, even the perfectly applied makeup. The dark and sensuous wardrobes add an air of mystery to this classic show and many characters develop through their fashion over the brief two seasons. Female characters often match plaid skirts with oversized cardigans to make a perfect fall outfit. The aesthetic is very northwest 90’s, and since the decade is back in style, you can easily replicate the characters’ wardrobes just by hitting up a thrift store. Bonus points if you can find a knockoff pair of Audrey’s iconic brogues.

3. Mad Men

No TV fashion list is complete without mentioning Mad Men. The colorful retro dresses are not only flattering, but the prints and colors also express their characters’ personalities. In a time period marked by restriction, expressing individuality through fashion was a common catharsis. Bright florals, rich velvets, and soft satins combined with cigarette pants and kitten heels create the ultimate retro aesthetic. While the male characters stick to monotonous suits, the women of the show stand out in their vibrant ensembles. Not only are the powerful outfits inspiring, but so are the powerful women who wear them.

4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

While Twin Peaks defined early 90’s fashion, no show is more quintessentially late 90′s than Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I mean, her most iconic outfit is red leather pants and a sleeveless tank. Even though the show’s characters made some questionable fashion choices (I’m looking at your bucket hats, Willow), there are also some seriously great pieces featured. Miniskirts, halter tops, overalls, and the lip liner look all make multiple appearances throughout the show. Buffy never sacrifices her wardrobe in the name of slaying, which means you have no excuse for exclusively wearing sweatpants during finals week.

5. New Girl

I firmly believe that everyone on earth loves Zooey Deschanel or at least should. A modern woman unafraid to embrace her feminine side while still advocating for women’s rights is pretty admirable. Jess, the title character, is basically an extension of Zooey herself, which applies for their wardrobes as well. Much like Pushing Daisies, Jess’ closet offers a modern take on retro fashion, complete with high-waisted skirts and peter pan collars galore. With her pair of vintage-chic glasses, even a set flannel pajamas looks fashionable.
