The Three C’s to a College Costume

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colgate chapter.

While Halloween is one of the most fun holidays of the year, it can often cause anxiety when trying to decide what costume you’re going to rock, especially for college students. Want a cute, creative, and cheap costume for this year’s Halloween festivities?? No time between school work to get organized enough to order a costume online?? Look no further than this list for 6 praise worthy costume ideas that don’t require planning and won’t break your college bank account!!

1. The Skeleton

I know you’ve taunted yourself with the idea of odering some version of a skin tight skelaton body suit for nearly $100 online. While it may seem tempting, there is a much more affordable way to get the scary and skin tight look you want. All you need is any tight, plain black shirt, a pair of black leggings, and some black converse (or other black sneaker of your choice). Simply add white duck tape in the form of a skeleton accross your front, and violá! You have yourself a skeleton costume! To make the costume more interesting, opt for glow in the dark white tape and add some skeleton inspired facepaint to top off the look!

2. Karen from Mean Girls

She’s a mouse…duh!! Spice up your average mousey costume by adding the infamous backwards K for Karen accross your chest in rhinestones! This costume is simple and all you need is some mouse ears and a gray outfit of sorts. It’s also a crowd pleaser, sure to make people laugh. Who doesn’t love mean girls?!

3. Risky Business

Don’t have a big brother or a boyfriend? Don’t sweat it, you still can pull this costume off with a little help from a friend or your local thrift shop! All you need is an oversized (preferably white) mens button down shirt, some tighty wightie undies, knee high socks of your choice, and some wayfair sunglasses to finish off Tom Cruise’s look! If you’re lucky you’ll look as fly as this baby :)

4. The Lumberjack

Turn a rugged look into an adorable costume by giving the classic lumberjack some feminine flare! All this costume needs to be a hit is your favorite pair of Timberland’s (or other pair of bulky booties), a distressed jean skirt and some suspenders over top any cute white tee. Throw a flannel on, or tie it around your waste, and top it off with a grungy beanie to complete the look!! You’ll crush this outfit better than a lumberjack cuts his woood!!

5.   Hippie

Wanna be a hippie? Look no further than your own closet. Throw on a musty Brandy Melville vintage tee and some ripped up boyfriend jeans or vintage flare jeans and you’re already half way there! Part your hair down the middle and throw on some John Lennon inspired sunglasses to top off the look. If you want to add even more hippie flare, get a Coachella inspired flower headband and accessorize with peace signs as you please!! (;  Look for inspiration in various Kendell Jenner show-stopper looks from last year’s Coachella!!

6. Where’s Waldo

Turn this lovable children’s book character into a cute look this Halloween! Grab a pair of your favorite light wash high-waisted jeans, tuck in a red and white striped tee of choice, put on a matching beanie, and wear some oversized Napolean Dynamite-inspired glasses to top off the adorably nerdy look!!
