A Reason We can All be Excited for the Super Bowl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

I get excited for the Super Bowl no matter who is playing in it, but boy, when my Patriots are going for the Lombardi Trophy, I am ecstatic. I mean, especially when they’re playing a team like the despicable New York Giants, a team that has robbed us in a Super Bowl once before. Who doesn’t want to see a great football game, right? Or I guess that’s what I used to think.
Recently, I’ve come across a lot of people, girls especially, who don’t like football. Yeah, I don’t agree with them, but I suppose I understand. Watching a bunch of Neanderthals run at each other full speed and tackle one another might not be everyone’s ideal pastime. I guess I wouldn’t exactly call the sport highly sophisticated or intellectual. But regardless of whether you’re a football fan in college, you have to watch the Super Bowl. It’s every college student’s dream to have a reason to get drunk on a Sunday night, and actually do a Sunday Funday, sans judgment from their peers. So if you’re going to be watching the Super Bowl (which I hope you are), but you don’t like or don’t care about football, here are some tips on how to enjoy it.

1)   Watch with your friends. I can’t imagine how boring it would be to watch the Super Bowl without a bunch of people to discuss the game with…and the commercials, of course. If you haven’t heard of any parties, have a few people over to your room to watch, or go to a common room and turn it on there. You’ll have way more fun that way.

2)   Pick a team and go with it. Even if you don’t like football, decide on a team that you want to win, and root for them. That way, when others are cheering, you won’t feel left out, and you’ll be much more into the game. GO PATRIOTS! (You should probably pick them, just saying).

3)   Forget about being healthy for the day. Eat some of the delicious Super Bowl staple snacks—chips and salsa, nachos, wings, pizza, candy, cake, etc. Super Bowl Sunday is a great excuse to enjoy those foods you don’t normally eat. After all, everyone deserves a little break from eating well and going to the gym.

4)   Play a drinking game. Drink every time your team your team gets a first down, a sack, or a touchdown. Chug out if your team gets an interception. The Super Bowl is a beer drinker’s holiday, after all. But Light or Natty is the way to go. I wouldn’t recommend drinking anything nicer. Keep with tradition and drink cheap beer to watch football.

5)   Find the best looking guys on each team and droll over them. This is the most important part of the article, because it’s the most fun, and therefore, the part that I spent the most time researching. Believe it or not, I just sat there looking through both the Patriots’ and the Giants’ roster for the last hour scouting out all of the best-looking players. So, here are a few of my personal favorites (yeah, I am including the Giants, too, to avoid this article being too biased).

First, my New England Patriots.

TOM BRADY:
Brady is probably the most amazingly beautiful man to ever play football. He was also the league MVP last year, and he is one of the best, if not the greatest quarterback of all time. Right up there with Joe Namath and Joe Montana. He reads the field like a book, and always knows where his players are. He throws the ball with accuracy and has a work ethic that is beyond impressive. He currently has three Super Bowl rings and is hungry for his fourth. I have a poster of him up on my wall in my dorm room. You can sometimes find me staring at it for extended periods of time.Position: Quarterback. Number: 12. Team: Patriots. College: Michigan. Age: 34.

WES WELKER:
Oh boy. Wes has the most catches of any receiver in the league this year. His ability to hold onto the ball and get those extra yards is unlike any other player I’ve ever seen. And he’s such a cutie! How could you not fall for those piercing green eyes? He’s articulate, and has an incredibly high football IQ. He’s the type of guy that I would bring home to my parents, and they would ABSOLUTELY approve of him if he were my boyfriend. Too bad that’s only in my dreams. Position: Wide Receiver. Number: 83. Team: Patriots. College: Texas Tech. Age: 30.

ROB GRONKOWSKI:
My personal favorite player on the team. He’s fiery, fun, and has the most receptions and touchdowns of any tight end this season…and ever. And his signature “Gronk Spike” is enough to make anyone go wild. Plus, he has the body of a Greek god. Oh, and he has four other freakishly athletic brothers, two of who play in the NFL. He’s definitely the best and most athletic, though. Although he might not be the brightest person I’ve ever heard speak, he’s definitely got a heart of gold. He sums himself up quite nicely. “Me llamo Roberto. Yo Soy fiesta!” Position: Tight End. Number: 87. Team: Patriots. College: University of Arizona. Age: 22.

AARON HERNANDEZ:
If you’re into tattoos, then Hernandez is your man. Another freakishly athletic player, Aaron will plow through the defense, making incredible slot receptions, seemingly with ease. And he’s got a smile that will melt your heart. What a babe. If you like bad boys, then he’s your guy.Position: Tight End. Number: 81. Team: Patriots. College: University of Florida. Age: 22.

JULIAN EDELMAN:
Whether he’s got the short hair, or he’s rocking the “long-hair-don’t-care,” Fabio look, Edelman is probably the most versatile player on the Patriots. Coach Bill Belichick will put him wherever he pleases, and Edelman obliges. He’ll go for kick returns, he’ll play on defensive coverage, and he’ll catch Tom Brady’s passes. He’s a beast, an animal, a really fundamentally sound football player. And he’s really nice to look at, too.Position: Wide Receiver. Number: 11. Team: Patriots. College: Kent State. Age: 25.

Now, the not-so-awesome Giants. This sort of makes me cringe.

ELI MANNING:
Yeah, he’s not my favorite football player ever, but he is cute. And he’s making a name for himself on the quarterback front. Many are putting him up there with Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers. I think he needs a little more time, but I’m also very biased.Position: Quarterback. Number: 10. Team: Giants. College: University of Mississippi. Age: 31.

VICTOR CRUZ:
This dynamic athlete is going to prove difficult to cover for the Patriots’ struggling defense. His runs and cuts are explosive, and his hands seem to have glue on them, or something—he catches everything. And he’s cute. If I were a Giants fan, I would probably be in love. Position: Wide Receiver. Number: 80. Team: Giants. College: UMass Amherst. Age: 25.

AHMAD BRADSHAW:
Runningbacks are always fun to watch, especially when they seem to float effortlessly down the field like Bradshaw does. He’s really made a name for himself the past couple of years, and we’ll hear more about him in years to come. Definitely an offensive threat.Position: Runningback. Number: 44. Team: Giants. College: Marshall University. Age: 25.
