MIXING IT UP: DESIGNER COLLABORATIONS

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

A growing favorite of the fashion industry, seasonal designer collaborations lend inspiration, innovation and spontaneity to the market. Historically conceived of as a way to enlarge the popular audience of high-end designers, collaborations make otherwise unaffordable, inconceivable designs readily available. From Halston’s line for JC Penney in the 1980’s to Karl Lagerfeld’s 2004 collection for H&M, consumers have willingly waited in long lines to lay claim to a design connected with a name of such esteemed value. Today, the holiday season creates a larger-than-ever demand for such collaborative specialties, driven by the attraction to a Jil Sander for Uniqlo or Proenza Schouler for Target that will only be available for a very limited time. Whether you are looking for a way to excite your wardrobe or for holiday gift ideas, take a look at the following designer collaborations set for this season.

Neiman Marcus + Target: Target has made a name for itself in recent years after Isaac Mizrahi designed his first collection for the store in 2002. This year, the popular chain is pairing up with Neiman Marcus and 24 CFDA designers to create an array of products ranging in price from $7.99 to $499.99. The collections will be available in stores starting December 1. Here are a couple of designers to look for:

  1. Parabl Gurung: Famed for his avant-garde designs, eye-catching prints and modernist approach to fashion, this favorite of the modern fashion set will offer about 80 pieces for his collaborative target line, with nothing priced over $200.00.
  2. Oscar de la Renta: His classic aesthetic and attention to detail will extend to his contributions for the Neimans + Target seasonal collection. Check out his adorable pet accessories and more. The dog collar and leash are $39.99.
  3. Diane Von Furstenberg: Favored by many for the youthfulness and uniformity of her designs, Furstenberg will offer items such as a yoga mat for $49.99 trademarked with her signature penchant for prints to the Target collection.
  4. Others: Rag & Bone, Rodate, Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu, Altuzarra, Marchesa and more will offer up a mix of home goods, accessories and clothing that are expected to fly off the shelves. The full lookbook can be found here

Maison Martin Margiela + H&M: With the highly successful collections of Matthew Williamson and Versace, H&M is none too foreign to the idea of collaborating with high-end designers. This season, look out for Margiela’s limited edition lines for the store, available November 15. This European designer is favored for his avant-garde designs and deconstructive, contemporary approach to fashion.

JW Anderson + Topshop: In the successful legacy of Kate Moss and Mary Katrantzou, Topshop has joined with British designer JW Anderson this season. The collection takes advantage of Anderson’s contemporary take on high-end sportswear with a notable preppy edge. Look for his line in stores now, with a second spring line set to debut next year.
