How to… Make the Most of Your Closet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

I love the start of school. Especially the first month, when you move around everything in your dorm five bagillion times so that everything is well arranged and you can figure out where to put all of your stuff. Cause let’s be honest, those college wardrobes don’t fit it all.

Last year, I was determined to have all of my stuff organized. I went crazy on the plastic boxes and storage bins at The Container Store. But I lived in a triple, and things got messy in my closet. So I decided I needed some new tactics for this year.

This year, I tried to put as many things as I could in drawers. Normally I hang up my cardigans and chunky sweaters, but since they don’t wrinkle I decided not to waste the closet space. I saved the space for dresses, skirts, pants, jackets, and all of my tops that might wrinkle.

But of course, it still wasn’t enough. So I got creative and ordered some really cool things:

1. This “Double Closet Hanging Rod” from The Container Store is my new favorite thing. It adds an extra bar to your closet. You clip the extra bar onto the bar already in your closet and it creates a second level. Awesome, right? It gets better. My sister had this genious idea to clip it to a pipe in my room. It’s like having one of those garment rack things but it doesn’t take up all the floor space. Now half of my shirts are hanging on the wall instead of the closet. They’re pretty colors and I can see them from my bed so picking out my outfits in the morning is that much easier!

2. This skirt hanger is great space saver. Instead of having to hang each of your skirts on different hangers, this hanger can hold up to 6 skirts. And it’s not chunky. Since you stack the skirts on top of each other, it’s as if you’ve only hung one skirt. http://www.containerstore.com/shop/dorm/closet/hangers?productId=1000521…

3. Alright, I admit that I make fun of my father for using these…but I have to confess that I love hanging my pants from them too!

4. I got this shoe rack and put it along my floor. It also works under your bed if you put it up high enough. No more having to trudge through all my shoes to find a pair!

5.  And don’t forget the boot holders…

6. If you’re bored of plastic storage bins, jazz it up with these fun bins!

7. And these are great for magazines or books.
