Gloria Steinem at Colby

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

If you’ve been checking your email or tuning into conversations on campus, chances are you’ve heard something about SHOUT! For those of you who haven’t, the SHOUT! event by PCB is hosting Gloria Steinem for a keynote address. The lecture is taking place on Thursday, February 28 and will be ticketed. Many of us have heard about Gloria Steinem’s incredible influence in the world of journalism and women’s rights, but for those of you who haven’t, let me give you some background.

Gloria Steinem has worked as a freelance writer, editor, and journalist, and helped create both New York and Ms. Magazine and the National Women’s Political Caucus. She has worked alongside women such as Jane Fonda and Bella Abzug, just to name a few. Her outspoken writing and forward thinking gained her a large following, but also some harsh criticism. Throughout her career Steinem has worked to change people’s perception of women both in the work force and on a daily basis. One of the leading activists of our time, Steinem has helped shape the way we view feminists and social justice. Today, Steinem still works on promoting activism and gives talks such as the one this February.

If you’re interested in hearing Gloria Steinem speak (which you should be!) PCB will be giving out tickets THIS Thursday 21 and Friday 22 from 8am-12pm in Pulver. Tickets are free, but you have to show your Colby ID to receive one. You can pick one up for a friend, but you must have their ID with you. If they run out of tickets, they will be screening the lecture in Lovejoy 100 and the Pugh Center. Get excited!
