4 Dining Hall Tricks Every Colby Collegiette Should Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

You’re so hungry you could eat the Mule Mascot, but none of the dining hall menus look appealing. Plus you have class and have to miss lunch, and on top of it all, you spent your last Colby Card dollar on Saturday night on a buffalo chicken quesadilla that sounded really good at the time. What’s a Colby Collegiette to do? Whether you prefer to eat in Dana, Foss or Bob’s, there are always things that you can make no matter how disgusting that day’s offerings are. If you know you have to miss a meal that day for class, plan ahead and make sure to go to breakfast. Not only is the food pretty standard, but there are always great takeaway options too.

  1. Cinnamon-sugar toast: This slice of heaven (literally) is a Colby tradition. Take your choice of bread and toast until desired crispiness has been achieved. Then, lightly coat with butter and sprinkle with the pre-mixed cinnamon-sugar. For added protein, replace the butter with peanut butter. This choice is available at all three meals, so don’t worry when the food looks funky, help is on the way in the form of Colby Cinnamon-sugar toast!
  2. Yogurt, oatmeal and fruit. Oh my!: This trick only applies to breakfast, but it certainly can liven up your morning and sustain you throughout the day. Instead of just having yogurt OR oatmeal, combine them for an added value. Add desired toppings and fruit for a well-balanced and tasty breakfast. This combo is perfect for a day when it may be hard to get to all three meals.
  3. The endless options of ice cream: At lunch or dinner, ice cream is a sure bet for one of the many dessert offerings. Though it speaks for itself when served alone, here are a few tricks to improve the frozen treat. After scooping your desired flavor, put peanut butter in a mug and microwave. Then, drizzle the melted peanut butter on top of your ice cream. This creates a hard-shell topping that is out of this world. You can also add ice cream and milk together in a glass and mix them together to make a milkshake. Peanut butter makes a great addition to this version as well. Milkshakes also make great carry out snacks when put in smoothie cups! You are sure to become a Gifford’s girl with these tasty tips.
  4. A snacker’s paradise: Besides the aforementioned dining-out options, the dining halls also have many items that are easily transported back to your dorm room for a perfect mid-day snack. Fruit paired with peanut butter, honey or even au natural makes a great healthy snack while on the go. Tea bags are convenient to have in your room and are perfect for a hot cup of tea to warm you up on a cold winter day. Cereal with some of the toppings from the oatmeal bar make a great trail mix when combined, which is perfect for munching on during or between classes.

With these tricks and tips, there should never be another hungry Colby Collegeitte on Mayflower Hill. Happy eating!
