Remembering Thierry Mugler

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Coastal Carolina chapter.

Manfred Thierry Mugler was a 73 year old man who was born in Strasbourg, France. He was very well known in the fashion and beauty industry— he did a little bit of everything. His perfumes sold out quickly and his designer dresses had so much publicity, he took the fashion world by storm. He has also written books, written dramas, shot short films, and even created costumes for plays and films.

When he was about 9 years old, he began to learn classical dance. He loved the art form of dance and by 14, he learned ballet as well. Around this time as well, he started to attend the Strasbourg School for the Decorating Arts. In his early 20’s he moved to Paris and started designing and creating clothes at a store called Gudule. Mugler also spent a good chunk of his life in India, to learn a popular dance form called Kathakali which combined dancing, singing, and other unique movements.

Mugler may be recognized for his unique facial features. He has had numerous facial reconstructive surgeries because of various car accidents he has had over the years. He has talked about one of the worst accidents that have stuck out the most for him, explaining how his nose was totally destroyed. These surgeries haven’t been a total success but he has told Interview magazine back in 2019 in, Thierry Mugler Bares All, that he likes to refer to his botched surgeries as “architectural research.” He has also stated that he is not bothered by it at all, mentioning how he has had a good life and that there is so much more to life than just external appearances.

Mugler’s perfume was pretty popular, especially “Alien,” “Angel,” “Womanity,” and “Mirror,” which were not sold for cheap, ranging anywhere from $30 to $150. They are said to smell like vanilla as well as cotton candy, the scents have a pattern of being simple but also very delicious and unique.

Everything that was done by him during his career had a deeper meaning, he was careful and thorough to make every move mean something. For example, he is famous for his well-known style of coming up with the new idea of incorporating broad shoulders and a tiny waist into his fashion and designs.

Thierry worked with some of the biggest names in the industry:Kim Kardashian, Sharon Stone, David Bowie, Rihanna, Lindsey Lohan, Beyonce Knowles, and even Katy Perry, to name a few.

Thierry will always be remembered for his amazing creations that will hopefully be carried on long after him. His impact will never be forgotten in the fashion industry as well as among the celebrities that wear his clothing. He fought hard to get where he got from the time he was a young boy all the way up until his passing. He’s inspired many to chase their dreams and to find their passion and create things from scratch and has also inspired many to become fascinated with the human body as well as fashion. His contributions to the industry will never be suppressed nor forgotten.
