Words of Wisdom from Graduating Captains

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter.

Her Campus CNU tracked down some words of wisdom from graduating Captains for current and future students! Read on to hear what they had to say.

Amber Myhand

Major: Organismal Biology

“Being at CNU is not something to ever take for granted. Yes there will be really hard classes, and plain awful weeks, but in between those are some of the best moments. CNU is about the nights you go dancing, the times you go to IHOP at 4 a.m. on a school night, or the nights you laugh until you cry or end up silently laughing and clapping like a seal. Live in the moment.”

“Everyone says college flies by but it doesn’t hit you until your senior year. Appreciate the time you have here and don’t wait too long to get involved. CNU has a lot to offer and you should take full advantage of it. Whether that’s getting involved in Greek Life or community service organizations, there are so many opportunities to get involved on campus. You don’t get too many opportunities to participate in dance battles, stroll offs, or “most basic” pageants once you graduate. Some of my favorite college memories are of these events. Looking back now I wish I had participated in more of them. Besides, part of the fun is getting to share these experiences with your friends. It’s true what they say–the friends I’ve made here aren’t just for four years, they’re for a lifetime.”

Janell Daniels

Major: Communication Studies

Minors: Childhood Studies & Sociology

“Surround yourself with people who challenge you, lift you up, and make you a better you. College is wayyy too short for any other type of relationship.”

Codie Frank

Major: Communication Studies

Minor: Leadership Studies

“Be involved right away! But make sure you get super involved in a few things you are passionate about and do them really well, rather than getting involved in more organizations than you have time for. It’s about quality, not quantity, of your campus involvement.”

Tori Trail

Major: Neuroscience

Minor: Leadership Studies

“My advice to all underclassmen is to take advantage of every opportunity given to you at CNU, but don’t be afraid to make mistakes, because college is the time to explore and just live. Discover yourself, learn something new, befriend someone you never would have imagined, break out of your comfort zone, and be proud of making it this far. And at the end of the day, don’t leave your family in the dust. Since I started my journey at CNU, I made it my mission to call my dad every single day and I have done it. Letting him know how my day is going, venting about my problems and classes, and just having him there to listen and know that even though I’m far away I still care truly has made such a difference. Being able to share my college experience with my cousin, Gabi, has been such a blessing as well. Cherish these memories and time here, because the four years comes to a close in the blink of an eye.”

Jordan Hubbert

Major: Fine Arts

Minors: Studio Art & Art History

“I don’t believe there is simply one happy thought that allows you to fly. I think there are many. People who love you, talents you have, hope for the future and even simple moments can lift you into the air. I encourage you to always remember all the “coloring outside the lines” that is life. There really are true moments of happiness and these are worth living for no matter how fleeting or far between they come. In closing, I leave you with this quote from Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore:  ‘Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.'”

LeeAnn Long

Major: Psychology

“Honestly, my best advice is to try to appreciate the ability we have to study as hard as we can and soak up as much knowledge as possible. I wear my nerd swag strong, but sometimes I wish in my past years that I focused in my classes even more. I’ve always found the information interesting, but only in the past two years have I really buckled down to make sure I can carry all this wonderful knowledge with me after college. Through life, we are always in the process of understandING. My focus is on the action of that word, the ING because we will never stop learnING and growING. I think we should all appreciate even more that we even have the ability and opportunities to seek knowledge the way we do.

This is our time to learn and grow, whether it be learning practical knowledge or social knowledge about people and the world. I love all of the friends I have made at CNU and there are so many extraordinary people that I’m glad I’ve crossed paths with, and I hope that it’s just a farewell for now instead of forever. Appreciate the people you enjoy here at school now because you never know where life will take any of us. Appreciate every moment to the fullest you can, because right now is the only moment guaranteed to us. Let your friends know you love them while you still can; in this moment. Someday we will all move to different sides of the country or even the world. I hope that if I’m lucky enough to see any of you guys in my future, that we can pick up exactly where we left off.

I love my life here at CNU and I’m so thankful for the doors that will open for me because of my time here, so now it’s on to da next journey.”
