10 Reasons Why Birthdays in College are Awesome

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter.

One of the great things about college is that you are no longer in high school, let’s be honest. You are no longer in that transitional stage where you are no more a child, not yet an adult – you can start living the life you’ve always envisioned for yourself. College also means getting older, however, which… ew. Getting older means jobs, wrinkles, and taxes. However, birthdays in college can actually be awesome! Here is a list of reasons why turning one year older is not so bad when you are a collegiette:

1) Gift Cards

When you get older, most of your relatives seem to have absolutely no idea what to give you for your birthday anymore. Instead of trying to guess at a great gift idea, now they just get you gift cards! It’s less effort for them, and you can treat yourself to something you know you’ll love! It’s a win-win for everyone.

2) It’s a School Night… So What?

No more bedtime for you! If you want to celebrate your day by clubbing until 3 in the morning on a Tuesday and you have an 8 a.m. the next day, you can. Don’t let something as arbitrary as what day of the week it is keep you from partying.

3) Alcohol

Birthdays are a great excuse to go out and drink all night – or to stay in and drink all night. Either way, letting loose and pouring yourself a cup is something to look forward to on your special day…

4) One Step Closer to 21

… IF you are 21 or older. Of course, not everyone in college is turning 21 – you may still have a year or two to go. But a birthday is a birthday, after all, and you’ll be one year closer to throwing a crazy 21st birthday bash. Until then, that had better be soda in that red solo!

5) Food

Birthdays mean parties, and parties mean FOOD. Of course, there are the birthday classics such as cake and ice cream, but don’t limit yourself! It is your birthday after all – go ahead and eat a second cupcake if you want; they aren’t going to eat themselves.

6) All Grown Up

Embrace all of the positive changes you have gone through over the years – physically, mentally, and emotionally. You have grown and matured a lot over the years, so recognize that. This is a day to celebrate you!

7) Independence

The older you get, the more personal responsibility and freedom you have. Now that you are in college and away from home, you get to celebrate however you really want. Wanna skip class for a day and marathon your favorite TV show? Now you can.

8) Cheap Gift-giving

Of course, there are upsides to celebrating someone else’s birthday in college, too. Your friends all know that you are broke because they probably are too, so don’t worry about getting a really nice, expensive gift. Just give something simple and thoughtful. It is the thought that counts!

9) Treating Yourself

College is the best time in your life to just do you. Treat yourself! If you want to wear a sparkly tiara to class, then do it. If you want to go on a mini shopping spree, then do it. You deserve nice things.

10) Being with Friends

Birthdays would not be the same if you did not have your pals there to celebrate it with you. There is nothing better than surrounding yourself with people that love you as they literally sing to you how happy they are that you were born.
