Student Body President Lindsay MacGillivray

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CMU chapter.

Lindsay MacGillivray, a junior Bio/Psych major with a minor in BME, has always been a leader.  She was a camp counselor and an RA, but this year, she has brought her leadership skills to new heights to better the community and the world.

Lindsay has always had a strong presence on campus, especially in Student Life. Last year, Lindsay was the fourth floor RA for The Rez, and now, she is overseeing the entire dorm as this year’s Community Advisor.  As a CA, Lindsay is responsible for overlooking the RA staff, working with the house fellow, and mentoring the residents.  She focuses on establishing a positive well being amongst her staff and their residents to create a great living experience. She sees herself as a type of older sibling to her residents, and loves to hang out and reflect with them.  “It’s not something I schedule. When I come home, I spend time with the residents,” Lindsay says.  To Lindsay, it’s not just a job, but also a lifestyle.

This spring break, Lindsay took her mentoring abilities to Guatemala with Alternative Break.  She worked in a poor, small mount town near Antigua, and realized how far this culture was from Western influence.  She no longer felt like a tourist, but as an individual immersed in this culture and ready to help.  The trip was an eye-opening experience for Lindsay.  “I have so many clothes at home, but these kids have only one or two outfits.”  It’s hard to justify all of the resources she has when these children have so little.  The trip has inspired her to focus more on bettering the community.  As president Alternative Break, Lindsay wants to focus on community service as a whole—volunteering out in the world and in the neighborhood.

And what better way to start this mission than right here on campus?  “Mac and Masters” is Lindsay and Peter Masters’ campaign for student body president and vice president.  They are both huge dreamers with a platform that aims to unite the CMU community, and surge campus pride.  Their three-tiered platform strives to accomplish this through aided access to student services, bridging The Bridge so that organizatins can communicate and pull together as a community, and establish CMU love that ensures that students are happy by providing more recreational ways to relieve stress and increase positivity.  After the election was over on Tuesday it was announced that Lindsay and Peter won and will be next year’s student body presidents. Lindsay and Peter encourage the student body to send in suggestions to macandmasters13@gmail.com.

Hello! I am a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University studying creative and professional writing. So far, Pittsburgh has been an adventure, and as a Philadelphia native, I love to explore new cities. I also enjoy reading (anything from Cosmo to the best seller on the New York Time's list), shopping and drinking coffee (they're more of an addiction) and spending time with my friends and family. In a few years, I hope to be in a European city working on an award winning screenplay, but grad-school would be fine too.
