DIY Holiday Gift Ideas

With Christmas break right around the corner, you might be thinking:  What holiday gifts should I give??

Here are seven great DIY ideas, including décor, organization, clothing items, and more. Everything is simple to make, and can be made right at home!

For your Dorm, Apartment, or House

Earring Display

  • Supplies needed:  picture frame, picture wire, acrylic paint and brush (optional), tacks
  • Cost: Less than $10
  • Time: 30 minutes

What to do:

1. Paint the frame (optional).

2. Take a piece of wire and lay it across the back of the frame.

3. Fold it twice so you have three strands folded together, just a little longer than width of frame.

4. Twist wires loosely so they hold together.

5. Space the wires about two inches apart and tack the wire to the frame.

Votives

  • Supplies needed:  craft glue, small glass jar, small cup, scissors, paint brush, light fabric
  • Cost: About $15
  • Time: 45 minutes

What to do:

1. Cut strips of fabric to fit the size of the jar.

2. In the cup, dilute glue with water (a ratio of about 1:2) and mix.

3. Submerge strips of fabric in glue and paste to jar, making sure to push out air bubbles.

4. Allow to dry overnight.

5. Light a candle and enjoy!  **Note:  Battery operated tea lights recommended**

Painted Glasses

  • Supplies needed:  glasses(from dollar tree), paint brush, acrylic paint
  • Cost: $15
  • Time: 30-45 minutes

What to do:

1. Paint the glasses in rainbow confetti fashion!

Organization

Dry-Erase Calendar

  • Supplies needed:  paint samples (usually free), picture frame, dry erase marker, scissors, glue
  • Cost: $8
  • Time: 10 minutes

What to do:

1. Pick out paint sample colors, six in total.

2. Trim to size you want boxes.

3. Paste onto a solid white piece of paper the size of frame.

4. Write on glass with dry erase marker!

Clothing Items

Colored Jeans

  • Supplies needed:  old pair of jeans, bleach, Rit dye
  • Cost: $20
  • Time: 2 hours

What to do:

1. Rinse jeans in warm water.

2. Bleach 2-3 times or until white.

3. Use Rit dye in any color according to directions and stir until desire colored is reached.

4. Hang dry.

Bow Sandals

  • Supplies needed:  Ribbon, sandals, glue
  • Cost: $30 depending on cost of sandals
  • Time: 10 minutes

What to do:

1. Tie a bow with ribbon.

2. To prevent fraying, roll edges and sew.

3. Glue ribbon to sandal.

Other

Glitter Anything!

  • Supplies needed:  mod podge, glitter, what you want to glitter
  • Cost: $10 depending on what you glitter
  • Time: depends on what you glitter

What to do:

1. Mix mod podge and glitter in an even ratio.

2. Use mixture to paint what you want to glitter.
